BUl if some body else takes th e m iddle pos itio n o n the line hut bea ts yo u to the corner and goes inside. you are going to be shut off. If a b unch of guys bea t you to th e t urn. you are goi ng to be sandwiched. None of those guys is going to move over to let you go through . If you start on the o utside and beat the traffic to the turn, you ca n go th ro ugh a ny way you want ' to and p ick your fas test line . If you do n 't ma ke it there first. and yo u are o n the o utside, yo u are n ot tra p ped by the cro wd . If there is a big pil eup o r if everybody sta rts slo wing everybody else do w n . yo u can just go on aro und the o utside an d some times it will pay . Wh a l it b o ils d own to is - you h ave lo asse ss yo ur o wn abil ity to ma ke a good s ta r t - a nd d o it ho nes t ly because o ther w ise it will just ge l you in tro ub le. I f I were in an internatio nal-class race . I would not ex pec t to be a ble to sta rt o n th e fa r o u ts id e a n d be at those guys to the tu rn. And if I d idn't beat th em and got to the corner w ith it full of p eople, I wou ld h ave to go all th e way aro und o n th e o u tside a n d wind up we ll b eh in d the lead ers. But it 's better to d o th at th an win d up in a b ig first ·turn cra sh all in a ball w ith a lot of o ther guys an d m oto rc ycl es. H owever in top-class racin g, fir st -turn c rash es do n't happen very often . Th erefo re in a race with guy s who are at least as go od as I a m - an d probabl y better - I w ouldn't ever think I co uld star t o n th e o utside an d b ea t th e m to the corner. I w ouldn 't s ta r t o n the far inside be cause I would b e pr etty su re some o f th o se rid ers would beat me t o the co rn er a nd then I would be sh u t o ff. I would sta rt somewhere ne ar the middle of the line be cau se th at gives me some ch anc e to gel there first b ut also some Ilexihi lity so I can go outs ide if I have to. If I am racing with good rid er s wh o don ' t cra sh a lot, but rid ers I thin k I can beat, then I wo uld ge t o n th e in side and expect to gel to th e turn first . riding witb avera ge If I am competitors , I go on the o utside .
