Pearl Harbor da y this year had special significance for the Exp ert class riders at Sadd leback Park , many of the m bombing o ut in th e mud only to helplessly watch thei r bikes sink to the hand leb ars. Aft er th e first few laps Saddleback's gully secti on looked lik e a ba ttlefi eld with scores o f men a nd machines down in the mud. Forty minutes and at least as m any spills later, the first mota ended leaving the I 25cc, 250cc, and Open class Expert riders lo o king like mud monsters fro m th e late, late movies. . Track officials watching the fiasco didn't even want to think about what would happen when the Beginners a nd other classes got on the track. A quick decision was made to reroute th e remaining motos a ro und the gully , which wa s hit hardest b y heavy rains two da ys before. _ Jed Mendez (Kaw) st arred in the 12 5 Junior ra ce, as he outdistanced and outclassed all hi s co m p e titio n. Mendez usually m aintained at least a 15 -second lead through out a ll three 20-minute motos. At o ne point Mendez was p assed by Bru ce Waters (Ha n) after a n apparent c ras h or me chanical problem . Mendez getting it b ac k t ogether repassed Waters a nd opened a no th e r large lead, leaving the ra cing to Waters and Tom Daversa (Han ), who at times were riding wheel-to -wheel vying for second place . When it was all over it was Mendez in his spotless lime green Kawasaki leathers asking UWha t is mud ?;" and a considerably dirtier Bruce Waters and Tom Daversa fin ish ing second a nd third overall. • Zahrt zaps CRC Experts By "G.J:' SIMI, CAL., DEC. 8 Everyone's eyes seemed to be on the 250 class, David Zahrt and his Bultaco in particular. The third moto became a thriller all the way 1010 W. Chapman Ave. Orange, CA 7 14-633-0064 when Zahrt ran into the fallen former leader , Rufus Kerr (Han). By the time Dave got back on his bike and into the swing of things, the new lead er , Allen Cooke (Bul) was over a half-a-lap ahead. Holy socks! Could Zahrt regain the lost time? Are you kidding? Are Coors can recycleable? Anyway, Dave started back in I I th pl ace, a nd by the time the white flag was waved, a mere five laps later, Zahrt was in second a nd buzzin ' righ t along. Allen's lead was 10 lengths, then eight, then four. Both were coming around the last tum, a b o u t 100 yards from th e finish line. Dave cha nc ed the berm short while Allen dug in h ard o n th e in side, a b it to o h ard, because he almost high -sided it, forcing him t o sto p co m p le tely whil e Dave, wh o ju st cou ld not b elie ve h is fa n tast ic fortune, gass ed it the fin al fe w fe et to win by abo u t five bike len gths. Th e 250 Novices were migh ty surprised a t the trophy table when th ey found out that the gu y wh o beat them, the guy wh o grand-slammed their class, the very sa m e Maico rider wh o led every single lap sa ve one, was 14 years old. Hol y so ck s! • (Open Sunday s) Indian Dunes AME MX: Hateley takes home the gold pipes reeds IKE By Barney Drake VALENCIA, CAL., DEC. 8 The gate dropped and the 250 Experts thundered on the reversed Shadow Glen course, which cre ated some new and interesting sections. Jim Hale had the lead on his radical red Penton, with Russ McAfee (Bul) scraping th e mud off Hale's rear tire, but not for long. Two laps flashed by and McAfee careened into the lead, never to be headed. Back in the traffic, John Hateley (Mon) was rapidly picking off riders until he was in second, but couldn't get to the screaming Bultaco which McAfee piloted. The second moto was even more exciting as Will Harper (CZ) nabbed the lead, followed by McAfee and Hateley, Hateley, with his impressive smoothness, edged by McAfee and Harper to grab the top gold with McAfee second and Harper third . Action m o st startling was in the 125 Junior Division. Little Wime Simons (Hon) won the first two motos with ease, but in the third m ota he was almost dead last off the lin e. Looking almost hopeless, he slowly but surely began to pick off riders one by o ne. As the race progressed, so did Willie. He had passed about four-fifths of the riders and in the remaining minutes moved up to second place to win fir st overall. George Viens (Han) took second ove rall. • Results in Results Section.
