Jim West (Mai) had a perfect score in the 500 Exp ert class as he grabbed the lead in the first turn in each of the two 20 minu te motos and powered o u t to a 200 foot lead, then put on a show for th e cro wd with feet up power slides , an d crossed up wheelies. The course was well prepared, no dust and no mud holes, but lo ts o f jumps. and a choppy straigh ta way. As Rich Thorwaldson put it. "Th e co urse is very dem anding. Yo u can't ju st turn it on t o the st o p an d hold it there. " In th e first 50 0 Expert mota a fte r West go t the lead, Marty Trip es (Yam). Ken Zahrt (Bul) and Thorwaldson (Suz) all were di cin g fo r second. but T ripes dropped out afte r three laps with wh at looked lik e suspension problems. T hat left Zahrt and Thorwaldson to figh t it out fo r sec o nd, as Jeff Wright (CZ) moved pas t Tim Barl ow to take o ver fo ur th. Zahrt was rid ing a very smooth an d fas t race and m ove d away fro m Thorwaldson. Another b a ttle for second wa s expect ed in th e second 500 moto, as West too k an early lead an d Zahrt jumped into second. bu t this time Norgaard was u p there in th ird and Wrigh t was also in th e thi ck o f th in gThorwaldson was st uc k bac k in tr affrc, As We s t and Zahrt moved o u t Thorw alds on h ad t o pass first Wright, in the t w o -ju m p up h ill section , the n go t No rgaard on the cho ppy top rid ge straigh taway. Th en h e wen t aft er Zahrt , b ut Zahrt go t th e go sign fro m h is pits , and put an end to th e challenge. The 250 Experts also put o n a sho w, as DeSoto j um ped in to the lead o n his Ossa. Mart y Tripe s again o n a Yamaha go t a bad sta rt. and was working h is way through t ra ffic . :\like Stearns (CZ) was battling Mik e :\IcG owen (Kaw ) fo r second . Al so Zahrt wa s watching fo r a n op en ing to move up. Then things start ed happening. First Tripes dropped out. then DeSoto lost his ch ain , had to stop and put it back on and was now in lOth spo t. S teams moved away from McGowen, who was now ahead of Zah rt, DeSoto was charging th rough the field like only he ca n do, a n d wa s moving up to th ird as the white nag ca me out, Stearns took the nag as McGowen was figh ting off DeS oto wh o finished only fou r feet short. Before th e second mota DeSoto sa id. " I go t to get wi th it , if I am go ing to ge t so me of th at big purse ," and get with it he did. Stearns h ad the first lap lead , and DeSoto was in fourth, Jeff Mathews slid o ut in the infield tigh t left turn . as DeS oto moved in to th ird. Then he go t Stearns o n the ridge stra ighaway , and th at was a ll she wrote . The 125 Experts we re out in full for ce with the likes of Ron Turner , Mark T yer, Mi ke McAtee, Ray Lopez, Brae Glover, to name a few . T ed Wee ks (Han) gra b bed the lea d in the first mota. and held off the pack until th e hal fw ay mark when Ron Turner go t by hi m , and wen t on fo r the win . Mean whil e Mar k Tyer ( FM F) pulled up to second . Mark Tyer go t the lead in th e seco nd moto a nd loo ke d like he had it won. Th en afte r five lap s T urn er started to mo ve. As h e was trying to set him up T urner's rear bra ke went o ut and the challe nge w as over . T ye r won the m o to an d th e class. G lover pulled up to second a n d t o ok secon d m oney.
