Rudy elec ted to stay o u t on the co ur se, while Walt slipped into th e pits for a clean visor. Walt's gam b le paid off, h owever, as he ca ugh t and passed th e ne arl y blinded Galindo three laps fro m th e fini sh. Wally Karpynec led o ff th e 12 5-200 GP an d 250 Producti on race with Dave Garoutte p ra cti cally gnawing his rear tire. Da ve inched ahead o n the second lap, b u t surrendered the lead for go od to Wally on the fo urth lap. As Dave drop ped sligh t1y adrift, Ro n Pierce sandwiched himself between the two on a borrowed 125 G P Yamaha. Glenn Billing (250 Yam) got the best of J ohn Weed (125 Yam) in a race-long dice for fourth overall. Ron's I 25cc class win gave him eight points to the II already scored by Galindo on (a) a 50cc Ital-j et, (b) a water-cooled 350cc Yamaha, and (c) a 200cc Campbell Suzuki. Their final chance to score points would he in the 250 Grand Prix . .. next after the 350cc Production race. For the first time this season, 350 po ints champion Bob Tigert was ab le to defeat Scott Clough at an L ·\ . Chapter race (having won all the 'Frisco races). Pierce (H-D) led from the start fo llowed by Roche (Glenn Ya maha), Fos ter (Denisen Yamaha), Jim Evans (350 Kaw), a nd Ho ffm an (Vesco Yamaha). Galindo's Posafuel Ya maha seized on the first lap from a suspecte d air lea k an d Rudy dejected ly wa tc hed Pierce lead the first five laps. Then on the sixth lap everything su dden ly tu rned topsy-t urvy as Pier ce 's rear chain snap ped. Evans also pi tted an d suddenly it was Geo rge Ro ch e o u t in fro nt o f Bob Endico tt, who had pic ked off a b u nch of riders after a slo w start. As th is st ory is be ing wri tt en, th e o ffi cial point totals are no t available , so we hear conflic ti n g versio ns of wh o won the o vera ll ch ampionship . Winner of th e AFM's 150-miler last month, Miles Ro sst eu scher ( BMW), grabbed th e lead in th e Open Productio n race a fte r Pierce 's 900 BMW broke o n the third lap. Cook Nei lso n (750 Du e) snatched second fro m Jim Lipanovich, an d tw o laps later Mike Parrio tt m o ved Jim down ano th er no tc h . Mike wasn't finished though, an d his we ll-timed last lap c ha rge saw him go ahead o f Cook just before the finish. _ As the sun slipped belo w th e horizon Miles went back out for the 10-mile Superstreet sp rin t ra c e, and went wir e-to-wire for th e win. Seco nd was Martin Se igel , who had cras hed in th e previous race.
