The big, fla t bla c k bazooka pipe re mained st ree t legal quiet (87 dB) and we could n 't find any way to crash o n the Maico short of hitt ing a ' cour se ma rking pOSI wi th the righ t handlebar and th a t ca m e from attem pts t o carve ever t ighter lines ar ound a 18 0-degree hairpin . This is not to sa y that it wasn 't showing some signs of the riding to which it had been subject ed. Even the sexiest lady needs res I and refurbishment. The head gasket was starling to leak and with 3 0 hours on the engine, it was time for new ri ngs. Th e standard Koni 8 0 dampers would just begin to fade a t the end of 30 minutes of motocross bUI still performed better in co nc e rt with their 100·lb. springs than most shocks do when new. Th e new I y configured double-downtube, full -cradle frame never seemed to flex and it didn't crack, even with DID rims mounted in place of th e softer stock st eel Radellis. Mai co fib erglass is still no t at the level of a Sl600 racer bUI the only crac king was from th e mo unting p oints on th e still air box. Though the fib erglass tank is standard on Maicos imported t o the U.S., th e slim line alloy tank is st an dard o n Eur o pen models. Na turally, a lo t of th e European riders want, that 's righ t, fiberglass tanks. Th e grass on the other sid e must always 100 k greener, even' 10 racers. Bosch o r Champion seem to work far better th an an y . Internally. the 400's porting has been modified to deliver the sa m e sort of powerband associated wi th previous models of th e 450 Maico. The power is always there. The 400 no longer co m es on th e pipe; it always pulls without whedspin or cran king the rear-end sid e ways. In a sense, this makes the added torque of the 450 now desirable only for deep sand or mud as the smooth , insistent power delivery of the 400 equals wh at the 450 p reviously ach ieved . This feature act u ally presented two problems in adapting t o th e m ost sign ific an t in tcrnal cha nge in the 400. Response to throttle posirion is abo ut th e same no matter where you have it tw isted, as opposed 10, say a Hu sk y or a CZ 400 wh ich ge t hairi er a nd hairi er progressivel y as yo u crank it o n . A nd th e q uie t pi pe silenced the en gine 10 th e po in t where it lo ok se rio us list eni ng to determ in e wh en the e ngine was ab o u t t o sign off in the d ead throttl e positio n wlien going into co mers a d braking. you do get used 10 it and learn to like the lack of noise but we killed the engine a co up le of limes in the first few days sim ply because you co uldn ' t hear if it w as t urning over o r not. The 400 engin e it se lf acted more bulletproof More b ullet-proof than ever - 36mm Bing on ours w ill be 38mm later. th an any Maico yet. Nuts stayed p retty tight and even th e engin e mounts never loosened up. The Maico bars are righ I because they bring yo u into the co rrect position and make yo u ride a Maico correctly. The Maic o grips are hard, unridged rubber and we can't tolerate them . 'Ourys replaced them fo r the test. That was the only change made or really necessary . The st andard Twin Air filter is the best curren tly availab le. Our test bike alread y had DID rims, which are nOI stock items, The tubular pegs didn't slip even when really wet and mudd y, though it seem ed like they should. Maybe they will under some conditions. A new 4 .50 Metzder knobby at the rear and a scrubbed-in 3 .0 0 X 21 on the front d idn't bother a thing, either. Though st ill not as powerful as that of an y other 400 motocrosser we can think of, the co n ic al ly -co n tained front brake offers just enough stopping power to do the job. It takes longer than 45 minutes to m ake it fade, b ut it will fade not much aft er th at. The rear brake, brake pedal, linkage, and spring return are just fine. You never nolice it; you just use it. You have to stand up and use both brakes 10 get the designed effectiveness out of the stopping units but it seems like the Maicowerke are determined to maintain th eir "consistent lap time: for 45 minutes " braking philosophy. Don't loc k 'em up an d you don 't fall off. The whole package weigh s in right around 240 pounds depending on the amount o f 40 ; I pre-mixed Bel Ray in the tank. With the notable exception of the Bultaco, that seems to be the weight of just about every competitive 500 cla ss production racer on the market this yea r. We 're talking about ready-to -ra ce pounds, which are all that seem 10 m a ke sense. But the Maico feels st able rather than heavy with m o re weigh I bi as to th e front wheel than othe r mor o cro sse rs. No matter, since th e horsepower t o move that weight a t an y speed is m ore th an ad eq uate. That also means there a re enough of those hard-Io-find ponies 10 win . Bu t when you do win on the 400 Maico it will not be primarily because of the horsepower. It will be because of that " consisten t low lap time " design approach. The Maico is easy to ride rapidly; more rapidly than you probably thought you co u ld . It demands very little from you in physical effort or survival co nce n tra tio n , It frees you for the business of racing. Because the design is intended t o be the absolute but minimum necessary to get you 10 the winner's circle, the 400 M.aico requires some of your attention, perhaps more, wh en you a re not racing it . The GP 400 with the LT R suspension seems to require less main te nance time for more performance th an a ny Maico has so far. We rodc it 10 break it and th ough we wore it down some , it never co m p le tely ga ve up . II is easy to gel ho o ked o n a rid e th at makes yo u fed and perform 50% better on just about any racing circ uit. And th at, race fans, is reall y wh at this moto cross Ihing is all ab out. •
