The next two motos we re a diffe ren t story, ho wever. Kir sche n ann, first finisher in the second mot o , used the same me thod to take firs t in the th ird mota also. Sap icoff ELSINO RE , CAL ., NOV. 17 Sunday at Rawhide Park the American Moto cross Club held th e first hal f o f a two-day series with th e second d ay to be held at Saddl eback Park. 125 Junior Gary Truesdill (Hon) may not have had th e greatest positi on in the first few laps, but by th e end o f each of his races he was occupying th at sacred firs t p lace spo t. His mai n competition came from second overall Mike Rai nes (Ho n) and th ird ove rall Bobby Coc hras (C·A) . Their th rea ts to take th e lead wer e not enough to ma ke Truesdill error or push himself off h is pace. The 250 Pro race saw Pe ter Maly (CZ) again ta ke the first p lace p urse b ut this time proved not as easy as when he rides in th e Open class . The first moto had Toby Takei (Ma n ) take the lead off the starting line onl y to lose it within the next few laps to Maly, wh ile Taki lost ano ther position to FMF rider Tony Rogers (Mail . :-Ialy looked as if he had the ra ce all sewn up. On the last lap though, as Maly was looking back to see just how close Rogers was to him, his bike drifted to th e outside of the tra ck a little bit too far and began a series of tumbles through the rocky sidelines of the co urse. Rogers passed Maly before he could get his bike fired up , but he was the only guy to get past him. The lap rem a ining was too sh o rt fo r an y ho pe of Maly ca tch ing Rogers, so he was forced to be co nt ent with second place in that mota . . The second mo t a fo r the 250 Pros had a differen t guy lead the pac k for the en tire race but because o f a bad 12th place fin ish in the first moto he would receive no be tt er th an a six th o vera ll fo r th e day . This fell ow's name w as Loren Hall (Hus) and b eliev e me , h e reall y put th e scre ws to th e rest of the Pros. Secon d fo r th is race as well as th ird for the day was a madman deluxe by th e name o f Drew Nelson , who rides fo r AAA Cycle Center. In the fo ur-lap h eat race. Sanders , ridi ng h is su pe r quick, Shell-framed 750 Ya maha , s t o rmed th e event co nvincingly, as he grabbed th e lead early a nd never looked back. Sand ers was th e fa vo ri te go ing int o the feat ure, but Wrigh t and Garcia were also top th reats. At the st art o f th e l O-la p main even t, Sanders got a terribl e start, leaving th e lin e de ad last. Wright, Garcia a nd Voge ba ttled fo r th e lead in th e ea rly going while Sanders passed six riders in th e first lap . By lap three Sanders was in sec o nd an d cha llenging Wrigh t for th e lead. Garcia h ad pro blems wit h his 750 Yamah a and par ked it for th e nigh t, At the hal fway point San d ers h ad really closed the gap on Wrigh t , wh o was aboa rd the Sanda k Racing Te am 750 Yamaha, an d it loo ked as th o ugh Sanders migh t catch him in the final few rounds. Ho wever , Sanders pulled h is big Yamaha into the pit area on th e eigh th lap , as he could n o t see because h e ha d no more tearo ffs. Wright, the 17-year-old from Corona, recorded th e easy victory . Voge inhe rited the second place finish wi th McEwen and Tom Worfolk followi ng. Little Mike T idwell looked quite impressive aga in as h e rode h is 25 0 Yamaha YZ to vic tory in th e 250 Expert half-m ile and short track main events. To prove how fas t Tidwell was going, he bea t th e twins of Rob Murray and St eve Fortune, two of the top hal f-mi le racers a t Corona. Top AMA No vice Dan McWhorter of Riverside also was in the race, ab oard his 250 Mo ntesa instead of his lightning-fast Yamaha twi n . McWho rt er su ffered so me tough luck in the Open Expert short track main, as he led the six -lap event for th e first fo ur rounds o nly to pull into th e pits on the whi te flag lap. Terry Griner took the win with J ohn Newq uist seco nd . Fred Co nover scored a double win in the Min i Cycle class , riding a Kawasa ki o ut of h is dad's sho p, C.H.
