California 93505 · FO R INFORMATION CALL (714) 373-4647 One of the inevitable relationships that grows out of motorcycle own ership is the interaction between the Friendly Local Mechanic and the owner of a sick motorcycle. The repairer-repa irec diad is frau ght with pitfalls, irritants, hostility and Fre udian connotatio ns. Perhaps some o f th e incongru it ies an d am bivalence ca n be ta ken out of this sit ua t ion. and to th at end Cycle News mo destl y undertakes to pr opose a " Code of Et h ics for Repairee Behavior." It reads. Do not expect your mechanic to are your discomfort. I nvolvement with the re pairee's ffering over his crippled scoot might ause the mechanic to lose his valuable bjectivi ty . We al l know that you want o go riding ten minutes after you bring t in, but the mechanic wanted to go .ding ten minu tes before you brough tit n. cheerful at all times. Your friendly local mechanic leads a IUSy and trying life and requires all the tindness and gentleness he can get. eople only come to see him when .th ey e in trouble. There is no need to bring ndy or flowers, just a smile, and aybe he won't leave a screwdriver in our cases. not suffer from breakdowns at you cannot afford. It is sheer arrogance to develop a echa nical problem that is beyond your inancial means. ay your motorcycle repair bills omptly and willingly. Yo u should co nsi de r it a privilege to on tri bu te to th e well -b eing, ca re and eding of yo ur mecha nic an d h is fa mily r t wo reaso ns. He won't give you your ike until yo u pay , an d frowni ng causes in kles. not complain if the repairs fail o stop the problem. You must have faith in your ech anic, If y ou r bike isn't p erforming up to par and you have it Iixed and it sti ll isn't peform in g - maybe yo u're the pr oblem. Do not call every day to see if it is done. Wh en you call a me ch ani c to ask if you r bike is fixed yet, d o n't e su rprised if he re p lies tha t it wo uld be if he didn't have to an sw er th e pho ne every three m in u res. If you call twice a day to see if yo ur scoo t is ready to roll, do n't wonde r why the hand lebars falloff in th e firs t big j ump. Never use the name of your mechanic in vain. The -repairer-repairee relationship is a privileged one, and you have the sacred duty of protecting him from exposure. Any shortcomings that have come to light in the course of getting your scooter fixed should go to the grave with you. Failure to remain dis creet could result in your going to your grave earlier than you had planned. Try to have your motorcycle suffer from breakdowns serious enough to be treated. Remembe r that your friendly local mechanic has a professional reputation to uphold. 78 % of all the work he gets in his shop says "WILL NOT RUN"' on the repair tag, of which 23 .8% of these are simply out of gas, 35 .2% have fouled spark plugs, 14 % have dead batteries, an d the remai ning 5% have so me th ing wrong with them . The pa t ient - do ct o r, lawyer clien t, priest - confesso r an d m ot orcycle mechanic - repairee relatio nships are rare m o m en ts in this depersonalized society in which we live. T hey are tr ue love bonds; th e lo ve you have fo r yo ur scoot an d the lo ve he has for your money . Jody Weisei 19
