That "stock" machine sure bums my eyes, but then specia l fuels are okay at HRA races. For six years the traditional a nd dramatic way to end the HRA events has been the back wards sweepstakes on the seven-eigh th mile IT course. The 100cc No vice win ners start fro m the . m p with each class after that drop p ing back a couple of h u ndred feet, ending with the Open Experts o n the starting lin e. The Experts h ave three-quarter o f th e track t o m a ke up a nd m o st of the time they do. But to day 13-y ear- o ld Mike T idwell sh ut o u t th e b ig b o res on a 125 Cooper. Suzukis again won th e 100cc Novice half-mil e and Open half-mile mains as brothers John and Mike Perez took home th e trophies. • Ivie broken, not beaten By Tim Mickey SUNNYMEAD, CAL., NOV. 16 125 Junior Paul Ivie (YZ) was having chain problems in pra ctice this Saturday, but when the flag dropped he was first away and nobod y cou ld catch him. 125 Int ermediate Gary Cain was get· ting th e feci of a bor row ed Su zuki and stayed on his tai l as the duo moved o ut o f reach of the pack. In th e nex t m ota lvie o n ce again grabbed the lead. Cain pu t o n some pressu re and succeeded in getting p as t on the downhill, but los t it all wh e n he shot o ver a berm an d let [vie by. Not to let it h appen agai n, lvie pulled away an d dis a p peared from sigh t, p ic king up ano ther win an d keeping a sus picious eye o n Burtt, who was o n ly two points behind. Th e last mota saw Ca in ge t back o n his own bike, a Honda, a nd use its horsepower to ca pture a nd hold onto the lead. [vie foll owed in clo se pursuit, looking for a way p ast . But before he co uld find it, he ca ugh t his ankle between a berm a nd his fo otpeg and broke it before he could re cover. He didn't go down , a nd sin ce he couldn 't let Burtt get past him , he decided to stay in the chase , losing a couple seconds a lap, but sti ll outru nning th e pack. After two long laps with a broken ankle, Ivie rolled past the ch eckered fla g and finished the clean sweep he'd been putting together all day . • Results in Results Se ction. c Tidwell victorious By Tom Blattler CO RO NA , CAL., NOV. 13 After weeks' of bike problems and bad luck, little Mike Tidwell return ed to the winner's circle last week at Corona Raceway in th e haIf-mile and TT-SteepIcchase. Tidwell riding a 250cc YZ from his dad's shop, Yamaha of Montclair, battl ed for the lead wit h Riversid e 's Dan McWhorter (Man), who was this season's top AMA p ro fessio nal Novice racer on the Wes t Co ast . The two each had the num be r one p o sition at least five tim es in the six -lap feature in the 250 Expert TT class . On the white flag lap, Ti dwell o pen ed up h is Yamab a YZ and passed McWhorter fo r the lead d own th e front str aigh t a way. Dan tried hard to get the lea d back, but Tidwell held on to vict ory. In th e Open Expert roundy-round, Brian Gar cia a nd Jim Wrigh t , the 17-year-olds wh o will b e transferring t o M f A professional ran ks next sea son, dazzled the cro wd as they dispu ted first pl ace for the entire six -lap race. On the last lap Garcia tried th e o u tsid e groove in turns three and four and the two Yamaha 750 riders came out of turn four side-by-side. The drag race was t o the checkered flag, with Garcia taking the win over Wright by a bike's length. The Open Ex p ert IT saw some pretty good co m pe t it io n among Bob Sanders of Whittier, a top rookie professional Expert. Jim Wright and Vern Maxwell. Sanders took an early lead with Wright and Maxwell right behind. However, Sanders ' 750 Norton began to go slow, and th e 350 Bultacos o f Wright and Maxwell took over the one-two posit ions. On the last lap Maxwell pas sed Wrigh t ov er the jump to ta ke th e • lead a nd win th e m ain even t . Results in Resul ts Section. Kennedy over Monroe By John Grout VA LENCIA, CAL, NOV. 13 Kenn ed y High School of Gran ada Hills and Monroe High School of Sepul veda met on th e high-speed Intern ational track at Indian Dunes and after the smoke and th e roar of the engines had faded int o twilight Kenn ed y had gai ned th e tit le, defeating its rival by six point s. Spearh eading the Kennedy a ttac k , among oth er s, was Ifi-ye ar-old Rick Kehoe of Granada Hill s, who is a Bvplus student. He rode to long yardage wins in both 12 5cc Expert motes, Other Kennedy stars incl u d ed Ann Larson (100 Novice), Ron Godel (1 25 Novi ce) , Bill Wright (2 50 Novi ce) a nd Russ Hoffman (250 Expert).
