Local MX hotline He re comes Tommy (17) Croft , abo ut to sweep another d ass at Car lsbad Sunday. CMC Junior & Inter. Champs By John Bethea IRWINDALE, CA., NOV. 22 It was Junior and Intermediate Championships night at Irwindale Raceway and more than 240 regulars turned out to provide 16 outstanding classes of glory rides, in addition to another strong contingent of professionals. Space does not permit the . blow-by-blows but here, at least, are the Season Champions . Ron Utaski (HG) collected $25 from a dis proven protest and the Mini Expert victory with a sweep of the three motos, Kenny Aplanalp (Han) held off two second pl ace bids by Larry DeSoto (Han) to ca pt ure Div. I of the Mini Juniors. Scott Phillips (Hon) had a tighter time ho lding back Dean Hoag (Hon) for the Mini Juniors Div, II crown as Haag had a 2-2-3 while Phillips cleaned. Cleans continued for a sweep in the Mini Juniors as Jimmy Simmons (Honl won all races. Brian McConnell (Han also wound up second in two of the th ree races for second overall. "The Original" Huff Hadley (Yam), as announcer Bruce Flanders termed it, streaked for three straight victories in claiming the 100 J rs. Div. lover Carl Sal Coll ura (Hod), a newcomer to CMC. Div. 11 of the 100 Juniors was the first slip from the sweeping categories and Rick Zamora (Yam), winner of two, go t the triumph over one-mote win ne r Dan Brockman (Suz). And th a t story was repeated by Neal Potter (Hon) taking two over Bill McFarland (Han) in the 125 Jrs. Div. I. Th en the trend came back with Rick Fiore (Han) acing his trio from twice-seco nd Ty Richey (Han) relegated to runner-up in Div 11, 125 J rs. Kelly Carlisle (Han) became the first J unior to claim the title with only one mota victory as he added a second and third to his total, equalling Mark Braunwalder (Han) on points. It was decided in the final when Carlisle took seco nd and Braunwalder third. The 125 Jr. Div III was a tight one. Tom Ortiz (Kaw) scored two of three wins and headed off Pat Delligatta (Han) fo r the 125 Jr. Div IV fame Actually it wasn't close, as Delligatta ha d a 10th in the final, yet still earned second. Arnie Ped roza (Han) came from behind, winning the final two 250 Jr. Div I mo to s and secured the victory with Joh n Tutora (CZ) grabbing second overall. First moto winner Danny Ciarelli (Yam) finished sixth on points at the final tally. One point separated Dean Jocic (CZ) and Chuck Ginter (Yam) in the finish total of the 250 Jrs. Div 11. They dominated the first two spots, and Dean did it the best . 500 Jr. Dave Gray (Mai) out-totaled Ed Miller (Hus) for the win by one point. Miller got solid seconds while Gray scored with a 1·3-1. Mark Lawrence (Yam) crushed his fellow 125 Int. Div 1 foes with a near sweep and Evan Marcus (Hon) headed off a tight battle for second. Div, 11 of the 125 Int. was easily copped by Steve Schilling (Han) from Bruce Ashmore (Han) even though Sehilling took fourth in the second mota. He won the other two. Mike McClung (Ya m) scored one position better than Tim Silva (Han) in each of the 250 Int. rounds and in the process the pair took one-two. Larry Lutz won the third round and took third ove ral l. Armstrong (Mai) held a Brian one-poin t advantage over Jerry Van Delle n (Mai) to win the 500 Int . Topping the Pro classes were Mark Tyer(FMF) in the 125s, Chuck Lunde Mo n ) in the 250s and Luke Messer Mai) in the 500s. CMC nigh t motocross at Irwindale will be shut down until January 10, 1975. • Results in Results Section. l Croft sweeps 4 motos CARLSBAD, CAL., NOV. 24 . Tommy Croft shed his helmet, pulled up a folding chair and collapsed into it. Tired? "Nope! I just tried to make sure the bike finished the race. No need to push it past its limit." It was the fourth -mo to in a row he'd completed this beautiful Sunday afternoon" All fo ur were firsts and they equaled sweeps in the 125 and 250cc Pro classes . It was only the third time this season a rider had won two classes in one day . Actua lly, it was a just finish to a topsy-turvy 1974 campaign for the young San Diego ace who rides for CMC Vice President Kelvin Franks. For the past four months the nickle-and-dirne parts that failed have driven both Franks and Croft up the wall. At one point the 250cc Suzuki power plant seized, lost ignition, etc. with no apparen t cause. Two weeks ago Kelvin sat down and Randy Myers gave Croft so me co mpet itio n in the 250 class. determined that it h ad La be either of two reasons: the oil mixture or the exhaust system. Both were changed at approximately the time all the failures began. They changed .the oil first and things suddenly began not La happen. "That's about I 0 or 12 motos in a row we've finished. And it feels good," grinned Croft. "Hey, did you hear I passed Wolsink last weekend and I was on my 125? It really upset him .. . " But this day it was Billy Urban (WTE) and Rick Sheren (Han) who provided the opposition in the 125s and Randy Myers (Bul) and Bob Elliott (Hus) in the 250s. And it was Sheren who gave it the hardest go with two hole shots that were equalized after two laps by collapsing rear suspension. In each 125 mota, Urban charged hard eventually to finish second and second overall. But Croft was the star of the day. In the 500s Luke Messer (Mai) registered his second weekend double in a row, winning Friday night at Irwindale too. Actually, he tied Jim Snow, another Maico pilot who hails from Hawaii, on points with a first and second apiece. The deciding feature was a poor start by Snow in the final round. This was the last points event for t he 1974 season, but it all gets underway again on Dec. 8 here when the CMC kicks off a new year with a $ I ,500 purse. Since many of the Trans-A.\1A regulars wiII be home again, it should be an outstanding meeting. And Tommy Croft should be a leading contender. • Results in Results Section.
