Marty Smith ho leshot everybody as downed riders and well-ch umed m ud made traffic jams of the first two turns . By the second lap, howeve r , J im Turner (Bul) had worked clear and passe d Smith, soon to be fo llowed by Ron Pomeroy (who was to fare better than his brother). Peter Lamppu and Bruce :'1cDougai were in the next gro up , :'1cDougal had been very happy with his four-stro ke Honda 250 in practice, but crud in the carb slide would soon take him out. With more cas ualties crop p ing up than could be no ted, Kent Ho werto n began moving u p . Ro n Po meroy wo r ke d into fift h past Smit h, as J o hn DeSo to dropped out and Howerton moved up to challenge Turner for second. Ke n Zahrt, in all the confusion, had moved into the lead from about mid-race. Pomeroy bogged down again for a moment , and the order was Zahrt, Howerton, Turner and John Savitsky . Zahrt fell with the two lap board up, remounted to finish third behind Howerton and Turner. Lamppu hung in fourth, a h ead o f Smith and Ron Huffman (Pen ). Pomeroy wound up two laps down at 14th, behind Marvin Azar and Rich Grafton. Smith again holeshot everybody when the second moto got off on a drier track with little or no rain. By lap two, Zahrt and Pomeroy were nose-tail in the lead and Smith had disappeared for a time. Bob Plumb settled into third, then came John Savi tski, Jim Turner, Peter Lamppu, and Rick Burgett. On lap four, Pomeroy got by Zah rt rou nd the swampy turn before the scorers, where Ken buried h is front wheel in the mud, muffed his pivot , and gave Ron just the opening he needed . Then Ron's chain popped off a nd Zahrt had it aga in, fo llowed by Plu m b (who was really circulating), Savitski , and a mudman that looked susp iciously like Burgett. Pomeroy got going agai n bac k in sixth to begin the long cli mb a ll over again. He was helped when the hoodoo struck Plumb. The rear brake tie bar came loose, allowing the backin!! plate to rotate around, locking everythmg up then the chain came off and jammed against the Maico's cases. ~1arty Smith's hoodoo was cured by mid-race (with or without human In t er ven t io n ? ) and though several laps down, he was circulating strongly again. Pomeroy moved into second w ith Turner in tow, fifteen seconds behind Zahrt and the countdown .began. With the two lap board up it was seven ~ C'l ... ~ ..0 E ~ > o Z Ro ger D. lakin' ca re of b izness . • . seconds, under the white flag it --:as five-and-a-hal f seconds, but Zahrt read the frant ic signals of the crews and held him to three seconds a t the ch ec ker (then almost fell off as he slowed to shake hands with Ron on the cool-off lap). Jim Turner had put together a two-three for second overall, Lamppu a pair of fifths for third, and Rick Burgett had bagged a fourth in this moto fo r fourth overall, tho ugh he had to lodge a successful protest to get the fact acknowledged. • Results 250cc SU PPORT CLASS: 1.
