Christmas g if t ideas from Cycle News Products ORDER THESE BOOKS DeSoto makes $$ By Stewa rt B. Sapicoff SADDLEBACK PARK, CAL ., NOV. 10 Sunday's 350 -ride r turnout affected th e AMC pro races to a cert ain degr ee. Picture if you can thirty 250 pros lined up at the starting gate, all of them havin g only on e thought in their mind, money ! Money can do som e strange things to people, and if you co uld have seen the looks on some of their faces then you would know what I'm talking about. The onl y word I can think of to describe their expressions ju st before the gate dro pp ed is "kill. When the gate fell there was a three man drag-climb up the starting hill betwee n Morris Malone (Mai), J ohn DeSoto (Oss), and Dave Carlson (Mai), all o f wh om were attem p ti ng to b e in th a t first sp o t by the time they reached th e firs t turn. As it turned o ut, the lucky fellow who succ eeded in do ing th is was Malo ne wh ile DeSoto was climbing right up his back tire and Carlson doing the same to the Flyin' Hawaiian. On lap four DeSoto managed to push by Malone for first and looked likely to keep it until on lap eight, while lapping a slower rider, John got into a bit of a tangle and Malone once again took the lead and held off DeSoto to the checkered flag while De.Sot o, with a busted sh ift lever tha t he had t o wo r k with his he el, fin ish ed second. The second moto Malone was ab le to hold the lead for only two laps and then lost it to DeSoto again. onl y th is time Morris was not goin g to get it bac k. John too k the first overall money fo r the da y wh ile Malone settled for th e second and Bob Stem (CZ) won the third with a 4 -3 points score for th e two races. Carlson bummed out in the second moto , fin ishing up with a tenth place for this race and a sixth for the overall. . • Resul ts in Resul ts Section.
