Bones rings Bell Curnutt By John Bethea IRWINDALE, CAL., NOV. 15 Shocks In the next-to-last meeting of the year at Irwindale Raceway, 203 riders pr oduced ano ther exciting program whi ch saw regulars again coming o ut on top o f th e pro card. David "B on es" Tayl or o f nearby El Monte, apparen tly the track favorite to judge by the cheers from the stands, pounded out a clean-sweep victory in his 12 5 pro motos, using outstanding star ts as his prime battle plan. There were 14 others in the race, most of whom had won at least once in the past, so h is sweep was we ll earned. Second went to Mark Ty er (FMF) with a co nsisten t sh o wing of 3·3 -2 while two seconds were Mike Bell's ne utralized by a th ird mo to sixth , dropping h im to third overall. For t he sixth time in th e p ast eight weeks, J eff Vidic (Mai) scrambled to the 250cc Pro victory circle, b ut thi s time he was o ne position short of a sweep . In the middle moto, Will Harp er (CZ) got the be tter dr ive an d held it for the win , but it o nly brought him up as far as th ird ove rall with Bob Messer (Mai) taking second in his first ride here sin ce returning from Florida. Where Bob failed , brother Luke Messer (Mai) suc ceeded, which is no surprise. What did asto un d some of the fans was that Luke won only one race all night and that when it counted the most - the final. Two seco nds had Luke tied going in with Gene Martin (Mai ), but his fifth dropped him to third overall when Bill Rubly (CZ ) came on stro ng with a second for the runnerup spot. To correct an y mis information, there will be Pro classes th is Friday night in the season finale at Irwindale in addition to the J unior a nd Intermediate headlin e billing. T he regular 200% payback will be in effect. • Results M IN I EX: 1. La nce Moo re w o o d (Yam) 2. Doug N i col (Hon) 3. B i ll Fancher ( MSC) MI N I JR D I V I : 1. Larry DeSo t o (Ho n) 2 . Turner, ho wever, had a wheel ahead for th e victory. Sheren, who had led for the first seven or so laps , took th ird . Turner, h owever, had p roble ms at th e start of the final and had worked to tenth place on lap three when his bike finall y gave out and he watched the res t of th e event from trackside. Ray Topham and Jeff Vidic traded 250cc Pro moto wins, but it was Topham's poor start in the sec o nd which cost him the overall.
