Th en came ano th er Yamaha ridden by Ron Thom pson . It looked for a mi nute lik e Thompson was goi ng togo over th e top . but he managed to set a ne w h igh mar k of 46 5 fee t. Go od eno ugh fo r a first place? based Carl Coll ier, Escondido Yamaha rider, ca me to th e line , sailed up past th e 4 00 ·fo ot mark, st ill running smooth as silk . He passed Thompson 's mark and man aged t o ch u m ano th er seven fe et up th e hill. Shaver, the "Mr. Clean " of hillcli mbing, was the only m an left. He hi t the soft dirt at the base of the hill , his bike went squirrelly . He opened the throttle even wider, managing to get ove r the fir st j u mp, at abo u t 150 feet. Upward h e climbed. gaining on Collier's ma rk. The bike slowed at 470 feet , bu t Shaver gained an other 10 feet. He won with a new h igh mar k in class - 480 fee t. No o ne, except Sh aver h imself , ca me even close to meeting th at m ar k in the 650 stock or modified classes . It wasn 't until Mackel's over in the Open class that anyo ne else saw the top of the hill . It was Shaver's day all around. He took first place in the 500 Mo d ified , the 650 Modified and th e Open class , then finish ed with a well deserved Top Eliminator trophy. "M r. Clean" made it • a clean sweep at DeAnza today .
