Ridi ng his q uick Yamaha with great determ ina tio n , Hen ry sliced thro ugh the pac k like a killer whale thro ugh a herd of walrus, passing bikes both big and small without discrimination. The highest place Hen ry reached in this first heat was fourth , te m porarily ahead o f Karpynec and Rogers, behind only Pridmore , Rosst eusch er , James Beaco m (Kaw 900). and Tony Murphy (Laverda 750) . Th en more bike troubl es set in , an d Henry fin ished seve nth. Tony Murphy's mo unt was an interesti ng one. Th e Mot orcyclist editor was riding a Laverda SFC 750 , working through traffic and passing Beacom's 900 la te in the hea t to finish third o verall , and fir st 750 (wh ich didn't co un t for any th ing sin ce the 750s weren 't sco red separately) . After the first heat Bob Hansen, Laverda handler fo r' the West Coast, pro udly pointed out th at th e bike was comple t ely box stoc k, Brian Duran (Hon ) moved past both Shephard Reid (Suz ) and Mike Doyle (Ho n) to be th e first 5 0 0 to cross th e line in the first heat, looking pretty good for an A FM Regional Presiden t, When the second heat thundered o ff the line, Pridmore 's bike st ill sat in the pits ! Next to it , perched on the pit wall , was Pridmore, volun tarily st aying in because, in the words of a BMW mech anic, "There isn't any co mpeti tio n. Let Miles win it." Miles Rossteuscher did win it, this time with Beacom second and J ohn Weed, replacing Murph y on the Lave rda, third . Karp ynec and his little Suzuki we re four th, with Rogers aga in right behind. Bill Henry , having kept Weed at bay with his Yamaha 350 most of th e race , ret ired with a few la ps to go when an inc reasi ng ly poor ru nning engi ne forced him back in po sitio ns. So ended the firs t clear day at Ontario in recent m em o ry . AFM held a road race th at was fu n, and practically nobody ca me . That was due in part to A FM Nat io nal politics. Th ey d ecided this race, one of AFM's best, should no t pay po in ts . and the turnout went away with the points. What a shame. • Result s in Res ults Se ction. BE TH E R E!
