AdVCTtilinK rate. and circ ula tion inronnation will be .ent upon request, See 4 S.R.D.s . - I' d like to ma ke some noise about Mr. Campbell's right-to-risk-on-the-road rumblings. I . disagree strongly. The followi ng instances are good examples of why. 1) A cafe racer with more hormones than skill ro unds a bend WFO and uses no t o nly his lane, but also the left lane . A car co ming the other way is forced off the road. Two dead.#The cafe racer isn't scratched. 2) I' m riding in the Santa Monica Mountains at a conservative pace, enjoying the fresh air. Around a tum come two of the jerks. One has already over -shot an d is trying to get back on his side of the road, the other is just ru n ning out of the lane on his side of the ro ad and crossing the centerline. Their paths cross just in front of m e. If I'd been traveling o ne iota faster, all three o f us would h ave crash ed . I've encountered so many on-eoming cafe racers o n my side of the ro ad duri ng Sunday drives , that I can no lo nger ride safely or enjoy it. 3) I watch ed a fellow trying to st art his motorcycle one day at th e Rock Store. It was a turbo charged Honda 75 0 (actually bigger probably). It was black. A fairing, lightened, com ple tely tricked up . Only it has no fro nt bra k e o n the mag wheel. The rider is so drunk th at he is having difficulty sta nding up, much less starting the th in!!. Someone else has to start it for him. (The act o f helping him start the bike borders on manslaughter, I bel ieve.] He rid es away with the throttle at the stop. Sure, Campbell, I believe everyone has the right to endanger their own life and limb, but they have no right whatsoever to endanger the lives or prop erty of others. Several of the lo cal road racing associations have classes for first-timers. Sure, it takes a lot more guts and skill to co m p e te in a real ra ce , but it isn't as di ffi cul t as it migh t appear. A fast street rider is only a paper tiger until he shows up at a road race. Cafe racing is irr esponsibl e , stupid, and chicken-sh *t, an d advocating it in print is equally irresponsib le. Wh y don't yo u try to get them o n the race courses , Ca m pbell? Belter yet, why d o n't you try it yourself? Or can't you cu t it ? JEAN GOODSPRINGS Pacific Palisades, Calif. J ean , I agree with a lot of your premises, but you confuse my describing a pleasurable pasttime with advocating idiocy. As much room as there is in a highway lan e d esign ed for caTS, there's no ex cus e for a motorcycle to be .o u t of it, at any sp eed. I, t oo , fail to see why a man who has 12000 and up to throw int o a gro ssly ill-conceived machine can't put the money into th e proper size and type Yamaha and get his fe et wet in sanctioned racin g. Bu t what about the guy who do esn't have th e money to go racing ? Or th e rider w ho f eels that coming out of the can y ons to race on a dead flat dra gstrip is a co m ed ow n ? Th ese p eople bel ong wh ere they are, doing what they're d oing, regardless of how many squ ids are drawn there by th e m edia h ype in th e mota-monthlies. "Irresponsible, stupid, chickensh -r: people are getting into cafe racing. Do you really want them on a racetrack, too ? . . L.C. Help! We at Torry Pines High School are brand new and are vigorously tryi ng to get a high school m o to cro ss team going. We're new at this thing although we frequently race. We're having a p roblem getting money raised and co nvincing the school to let us d o it. ['m just writing to ask if yo u wo uld have some helpful [ kno w tha t moto cross is growing so fast th at there is hardly ti me to develop rules a nd regulations . But I think th at some form o f requirements should be met before a rider can ra ce with the real pros like John Hrynkiewicz. He was invo lved in an accident wi th a pseudo -pro at Rawhide that left him with a pin in h is sh o uld er. An ybody can get on the trac k and wick it b ut th at doesn 't classify y o u as a pro. One must have the skill and knowledge to avoid accidents an d to be co nce rn ed about fellow riders so that you don "t ca use accidents. John Hryn kiewicz, one of the fastest riders aro u nd , won 't h e co lle cting th e lion's sh are of th e purse for so me time. He was sure loo kin g forward to the ch eckered flag at Evels. Perh ap s these sq ui ds sho ul d stay with bicy cle MX until th ey have enough skill to race with the big bo ys fo r th e bi g bu cks. E. C. CHlTLIN So . EI Monte, Calif. Cactus Cats course complaint I'm writing to y o u abo u t the Cactus Cats District 37 desert race that [ participated in on October 20, 1974. Its course markings were the poorest quality of an y desert race I have ever entered. At least half the time I was following an unmarked course. At one point I was on a course that had pink ribbon on it, and the Cactus Cats cou rs e was "supposed" to have been marked in orange ribbon. There we re numerous unmarked road crossings an d unmarked dangerous areas. When the course made a tum there were no markings of any kind to show the way. Clubs that th row such poo r qualit y races and show no concern for rid er safety shoul d have to be p en ali zed in so me way . I think that th ey sho uld have to appear before the District 37 Spo rts Comm ittee and give an ex planation to all the mem bers of the District and also to all the riders who participated in their so called ra ce. LAR RY J. PATTERSON Simi Valley M.C. Dearest Pooper, R.E. your anecdote about English law forbidding glass fibre ' (as they say) fuel tanks, I must say my ow n personal Greeves MX-5 has two.
