Located j ust off Hwy. 138 southeast of Palmdale, California, the site has several things going for it, according to Deputy Director Robert H. Meyer: (1) Fairly close to the Big Cit y (see map ); (2) High dollar effectivness (bureaucratese for "the lan d's cheap"); (3) Well-defined If the average American car got 20 miles pe r gallon, a goal the Ford Fo undation suggests fo r 198 5, th e U.S. wo uld save one billion barrels of oil a year at current car use levels. That is more oil than we imported from Arab countries in 1973. If half the po pula tio n drove motorcycles half of the time instead of cars, the savings wo uld be greater. In the past year, HRA Benefit races at 395 Cycle Park near Adelanto, CA have : Contributed $1000 to the Victorville High School band, bought rescue equ ipment for Adelanto's Volunteer Fire Department and on November 10 again donated track and proceeds to benefit the Desert Communities Un ited Way. Maybe concerned motorCyclists put more back in to the envi ronment than they're claimed to destroy . Don 't forget, the long-track speedway rac es at Ascot are this Friday , November 15. Races start at 8 p.m. Bates Industries (leat hers, to you) is putting up $50 each for the winners of Scratch Main, Handicap Main, and Trophy Dash at Ascot's November 15 half mile speedway. Awards subject to customary conditions of product use and advertising release. Two motocross tracks, one fo r 0-100cc and one for 100-360cc bikes, are planned for the City o f Cerritos' initial 4.5 acre cycle park. Made possib le by a $97 ,228 California OHV fund grant, the park may expand to 20 acres. Husband-wifery : Gary and Peggy Fuller of Baytown, Texas, both decided to rid e pro in 1974. Gary has earned his advancement p oints to J un ior , an d Peggy is j ust fo ur points short. The Pacific Northwest will still have a female Junior, Diane Cox's elevation notwithstanding. Tammy Sessions of Seattle picked up five points in 1974 to go over the hump. If Americans wo uld dr ive motorcycles half of the time instead of cars, they'd each save about $1 75 a year that would otherwise go up in smog. In six years the saving on gasoline cost alone would be $1050, abo ut the cu rrent price of a good medium-size motorcy cle. By the time that machine has 45,000 miles on it, at 50 mi les per gallon, it will have paid for itself. It will have used only 900 gallons in racking up that mileage , at a current co st of $450. AMA's Ed Youngblood, with the f irst tie vote in FIM history, almost became the i n t e r n a t io n al organ izat ion 's youngest Vice Pres ident. However, Frenchman J . leseuer won on the second ballot. Eve' Kn ievel deserved his pardon. Said Sheene, "No, I've ne ver been on one of these (ha/f-milers) but I really wish we could get this type of rac ing going in England . . . It's more fun to watch than a road race ." Barry also said the dice with Gene Romero at Ontario was the most fun he'd had in a long time. SaCaI's November 17th District 37 poin ts run is promised to be a "virgin run." That is, aU new territory, never before desert raced .
