As for th e trop hies - yes, th e Checkers got screwed on their famous "Bottle" trophies this year and had to get others a t the last minute, but yo ur reporter doesn't coun t very well . They gave him a copy of the results; all he had to do was count X's. The Checkers trophied 154 fin ishers which is 17 .2% of the starters (over 1/3rd of the fi nishers)! 6 Hook & Ladder benefit happening Trans·AMA 8 Dr. Wolsink, I presume? Dear Senato r T u nney: This is in reply to your inquiry regarding correspo ndence from Mrs. Rebecca Burke who has suggested a motorcycle recognition week. During th e las t d ecad e there has been a co ntin ued growth in the use of m o t or c y cl e s f or recreat ion and tra nsportation . . . With the growth in mo to rcycle usage we have had a co rrespo nding increase in rno t orcycle accidents , inju ries and dea th s. During 1974 we estimate that fat alities will re ach 4000, an increase of abo ut 20 pe rce nt ove r the to tal duri ng 197 3. Moto rcycles a re inh er en tly less safe than enclosed veh icles, a nd their use in a traffic m ix creates safe ty pr oblems . There is a nee d for grea te r public awareness of the hazards in he rent in mo torcycle usc. Also, a need exists to better inform d rivers about the rights and duties of motorcyclists and about their capabilities and limitations. However, posit ive aspects of energy conservation must be weighed against safety and other aspects before po licy decisions are made actively to promote motorcycle usc. WILLARD Y. I feel you r readers should know about the screwing the American Sidehack tea m is getting in the so-called American-European Sidecar Motocross series. So far three of the six ra ces have been held. To date the Europeans received all the money they we re promised. but the Americans received only a part of their start money. I am aware of the fact the series is a failure, and every track owner who has hosted th e mo to cro ss sidecars has lo st money. but I fee l the manager for the U.S. team should lo o k out for the riders. To d a te the so-called team manager for the U.S. team bas ma de noth ing b ut excuses as to wh y the ri ders are o n ly getting par t of the prom ised mo ney. It is reall y to o bad this ra ce series has turn ed into suc h a fl op, for if ha ndl ed right Moto cro ss Sid ecar s could be an exciti ng part of mo tocross raci n g.
