On th e first weekend the d aytime temperature wa s in th e seven ties. On the next ra ce d a y it w as in the thirties an d dri zzling. I h ad 3D-wei ght oil in the forks a n d on th e warm day it worked fin e . Wh en I wen t o ut 10 the bike o n that co ld morning the fo rks were so st iff I co uld h ardly m ove them. I wasn't racing t ha t d a y so I didn ' t ch a nge the fork oil b ut if I h ad, I would hav e tri ed 2 0-weiglit a n d if t ha t was to o stiff I would have go ne to l O-weight. I m ight have wound up with so me m ixtu re suc h as h al f IO-we ight and half 20-weigh t. Fo r sure, I would nev er have raced the bi ke on tha t cold d ay with the sa me 3 D-weight o il in th e forks. Vo u shoul d drain o ut th e old oil in the forks a nd replace it pe ri odicall y yo ur m an ual sh o uld tell yo u h ow o fte n. If you b uy an MX bi ke it won't h ave any speedo me ter or od o me te r to rec o rd the mil es tr av el ed but th e m anual ma y tell y ou th e mileage a t which y o u should ch a n ge the fork oil. In that cas e, guess at it or c hange it eve ry three months o r so. If yo u r fo r k seals ar e n ot leaking, you don't h av e to worry ab o u t th e o il inside as much and y ou don't have 10 ch a nge it as often. If the seal s a re letting o il o u t, th ey ar e a lso letting di rt ba ck in. When y o u drain you will get out some abrasive black sludge instead o f fa irly clea n-loo ki n g oil. Vou can develop your own oil -changing schedule by looking a t the co n d id tio n o f th e fork oil w hen y ou drain it o u t . If it is really cr u d dy . y ou wai ted t oo long. Some o f th e fork seals thai com e stoc k o n a b ike arc not much go o d . I h ave see n them leak in g on the sh owroom floor. Th er e are replacement seals guaran te ed n ot to le ak fo r o n e year. I hav e us ed th em an d th ey wo r k lin e for m e. If y ou insta ll new seals o r rubber co vers. you ha ve to tak e th e fo rks apart 10 d o it but then you shou ldn't h ave seal p roble ms for a lo ng time. Some times at a sch ool we w ill b e pr ac ti cin g o n some difficult pi ece of th e track an d a rider w ill say. " My b ik e just won't go th ro ugh th er e." I ma y ge l o n his ma chine t o find ou t what h is problem is a n d when I lift up on t he bar s go ing th ro ugh th e sec ti o n , th e front wh eel shoots o ut an d goes " Clan g ."
