Rick Chavez (YZ ) co u ld n't stay with him, but he did suc ceed in running away from th e remainder of th e p ac k and in keep ing Johnson 's rear fende r in view. For Johnson, it was a string of firsts, and for Chavez , it was th e we ll-ea rned sec o nd . Steve Moore (Ha n) followed su it by getting o ut in front o f th e 125 Beginners and sta ying there . The ra ce for second was tak ing place in his wake. There were a pair of ties, for sec o nd and third pl aces, and it took the fin al mota to br ea k th em up . Third pl ace Richard Sm ith p ulled all stops by seizing the lead, and it loo ked as if he might have gotten aw ay with it until Moore made his move from behind, got past, and (as it turned out) cost Smith the second by putting him ba ck just that one position. Joe Crowley (Han) had more points from his more co nsisten t riding earlier and co lle cted the second with a 'third placefinish. • Results in Results Secti on. In the 250 Expert Hal f-mile feat u re , seven o f the top SoCaI Exp er ts were co mpe t ing. At the sta r t of the ma in event, th e Yamaha twins o f Vin ce Mead , Bill Carpe nte r , and Terry St atum showed t heir superio rity , as t he three left th e rest of the field smelling their fume s. On the second lap, Mead d ash ed into the lead down th e backchute , leav ing Carpenter and Statum battling it out for second. As the white flag came ou t , Carpenter then started clo sing the gap in a hu rry o n the lead er Mead, but it was a little too lat e. Ontario's Eddi e Lawson returned to the win ners ' circle after a long ab sen ce, as he captured the 125 and 250 Expert TT Steeplechase main events. In the 250 Expert TT fea ture, Lawson an d Bru ce Reynolds, one of the finest TT riders in the Soutland, put on quite a show , as they di ced ba c k and forth for the lead with Lawson taking the victory. Wayne Rainey scored his third consecutive 125 Expert half-mile feature as he and Lawson battled from the sta rt, and were wheel-to-wheel many times in the main event. This week at Corona Ra cew ay , the short track returns along with th e hal fmile. • Results in th e Results Section. , I - CORONA, CAL. , OCT. 16 Charles Soderstrom returned to Corona Raceway last night, and rode his 750 Yamaha to victory in the Open Expert Main. Soderstrom, an AMA Junior fro m San Pedro, was defe ated in his earli er heat rac e bv another AMA Juni or Chris Smi th of Ontari o . The sta ge was set for the . two rid er 's seco nd mee ting of th e night in the main even t. Smith and Soderstrom began t o battle for the main even t lead at th e start, with the 360 Yamaha s o f Bria n Garcia an d Terry Griner righ t beh ind . Soderstrom m oved by Smith do wn th e ba ckstraight as Smith 's 750 T riu mph began to slow d own ra th er quickly . Next lap, Sm ith pull ed hi s Trium ph in to the pits area and was fini sh ed fo r th e evening. By the th ird lap of th e feature , Soderstrom had an easy lead ove r Garcia and Griner wh o no w we re begi nning to baltic fo r second . Garcia h ad go t ten an excellent start and had opened up qu ite a margin in the early par t of th e ra ce. However, Griner, who rides the hardest in the co m ers at Corona, started closing the gap on Garcia . However. Garcia was More H.S.
