CAL.• OCT . 5 DeAnza's track was covered wi th mud this Saturday, due in par t to the cloudy skies, and while some riders suffered from it. others used it to an advantage. Ron Cain (Suz) , 125 In term edi ate, couldn't catch his bro th er Gary (Hon) in the first m oto , but i in the seco nd, while holding a slight lead . he plowed thro ugh t he standing waterhole and sent up a tidal wave which dr ench ed his pursu ers, ca using Gary to wash o ut in th e next t um with mud covere d goggles. It wo r ked in th e last moto too, wh en the pair were dicing to break th eir tie. Ron ca ugh t a piece of the p uddle and sent i t ove r onto Gary again. While Gary did n't go do wn, he had to ditch his goggles an d his glasses, and that was all the advan tage Ron needed for th e ove rall. Ro y J oh nso n (Hon), the berserking 125 Junior t hreat, had proble ms with the mud, and though he beat Dale Brown (Hon) in th e first moto , he fo und hims elf picking up his bike a lot in th e nex t two, even getting run over by a trio of bikes in the final m o to , He remo unted, but couldn't ma ke a serious bid for the win after that. 125 Begin ner Mark Ellis (Suz) loop ed his bike in the mi re early in the first mo to, b ut got back on and went on to win his class . In the final two , he defeat ed the glop by st aying hooked up , chased t he Intermediates, and in what was probabl y one o f his last races as a Beginner, ti ed together a cl ean sweep. • Results in Results Section. R.A.C.E. MX By Laurie Ellis CORONA, CAL., OCT. 3 Th e second moto of the 125 Beginner class h ad an exciting battle between Lambert Vandertui g and Rick Van Ryn, both mount ed on Il o ndas. Vander tu ig led co ming out o f th e sta rt with Van Ryn in secon d. Van Ryn made t wo attempts for the lead and to o k it away . His opportunity ca me when Va ndertuig slowed to enter a tu rn . They stu ck close toget h er , dueli ng for the firs t position . an d Van Ryn ~ot wh at he wanted wh en he took over th e lead on the straigh taw ay. S teve Harp er was n't do in g too great in the firs t m oto o f the 125 Junio r cla ss, where he too k eighth , but in th e second and th ird h e really go t hi s Honda go ing and h e clai med t wo firsts and th e ov erall win despite his earl ier problems. In the first mo to Rich ar d Grafton, on a YZ mon o-sh ock er , rocketed into the first tum ah ead of the pack and attempted to lengthen the gap between himself and second pl ace Mart y Moates (Hon) . Rich ard Pinnick (Yam ) p ressured Moates until the seve nth lap wh en he finally shot past and began trying to catch Grafton . Moates pulled out of the race on the next lap with a b unch of hairline crack s all over his swingarm . Grafton was safely in front o f Pinnic k who in tum was sa fel y ahead of Rich ard Kastner (Bul ). The second moto saw Gr afton leap into th e lead where he st ayed from sta rt to finish. Just like mo to o ne , Pinnick was in seco nd spot , but he co uld n't catch the sp eedy Grafton and wa s for ced to be co n te n t with a second Overall. Back in third place there were lo ts o f ch an ges going on with Kastner being first in this spo t , only to lose it to Kevin Willis (H us) two laps later. Willis stayed there for three-q uarte rs of th e race with o nly an occ asional hassle from . j ack Hazard (Yam ).
