IiIJ Cycle • -News North 51 I:iilI 5lQ g ~ g -er- C'l C'J C'J .... ~ ~ 0 .... u 0 Editor Lane Campbe ll If you don't like it-buy it By Jan Newman WOODBURN, ORE., OCT. 6 You don't dare get the local Old Timers riled up. They were un happy with the owner-promoter's lack of preparation for the Old Timers National last month so a handful of them got together and bought the place - lock, stock and barrel. It was evident that someone new had a hand in things. The track had been disced and watered as well as time would allow and . they continued watering (with a truck that really worked) all day as the races proceeded . There was even a short break midway through for the dis c to make another lap . Not the least of the welcome sights, by any means, were the clean chemical porta whatcvers, a clean concession stand on wheels and a real. live ambulance . Fortunately the first two got more use than the third. Their main appearance was more in a mechanical than medical line when Bryan Miles (Kaw) and Tom Fisher (Suz) came together in the second 250 Junior race and Fisher wound up with the .old foot-in-the-shock trick. The ambulance crew supervised the extraction while Miles waited patiently for his Kawasaki to be freed so he could continue on. His 11 th place in that race put him out of the brass but he rode to a second and third in the other two. Danny Baker blew the doors off everyone on a Rickman . In the Open Junior c1ass,Ph il Kepler (Suz) won the first round but didn't finish the second. He came back for a fifth in the final but was out of the brass. Mike Davis (Hon) had his bid cut short whcn his throttle stuck in the second race . Jim Newman (Mai) came out on top . Pros were almost nonexisten t, Three signed to ride Pro but Tim Monte (Mai) J im Ne wman fi ni sh ed in the b rass, an d he k nows it. moved up to ride with them because he was the lone Open Intermediate rider. That made' two Open bikes, a 250 and a 125. Barney Newman (Mon) won it but David Naylor provided the excitement . He rode his 125 Elsinore in the first race and had a solid second going when his bike seized. He borrowed Newman's Monark fo r the rest of the . day. In the second moto he got in front when Newman had a brief mechanical problem and held on until the one la p flag. Newman just got by when the Monar k's plug went sour on Naylor. Dave was ru nning second again in the final race when the bike quit. Maybe he WaS just asking too -much of a 125 on a course with lots of long stretches and few tight corners. Expert Ron Brown (Yam) carne out on top as he and Jim Newman (Mai) battled way out in front of the rest of the Old Timers. Jim Morgan (Bul) was first Novice. SEPT. 29 All the trips Rudy Leon has bee n making to Los Angeles finally paid off with a big win in the 250 Expert class at the recently reopened P.A.L. track. Leon, who rides a new Pen ton, says tha t racing with t he fast du des real ly helps up here. Off the line and into th e turn first was Curt Berggren (YZ) , coming up fast was Leon and Kent Classen (Pen) . Over the infield jump Berggren was all alone; in the next mass of riders was Leon, who locked up his bike in the hairpin. He got going again but was almost in last p lace . Berggren, looking completely relaxed, motored away. By the seventh lap Leon had worked up to nag second place Classen, who wasn't about to lose now. Leon kept up the pressure like a cat and Classen was the mouse. Leon finally was by Classen. But as they ended the last lap Gary Murphy (Hus) had sneaked up to Leon and was by before Ru d y realized what had ha p pened . Leo n got a disappointing third place. Curt Berggren again pulled the pl ug first in the second moto and rocketed away with another giant lead . T his time Leon was righ t behind h im and after they reappeared comi ng o ut of o ne of t he drop-off's. Berggren was back to fourth place after a sp ill on a dusty be rm. Leon was now free to build up a good cushion between him and second · place Chris Grewer (YZ). Berggren had to get by Grewer if he wa nted the win but he had bent his brake pedal and it was useless. Leon put together two consistent rides for first overall with Mike Leah y (2 6 ) and Loren Gilliam (407) have their own th ing go ing in 250 Junior at Fox Ho llow, and the spectators are f reakin' out.
