Privateer Ron Pierce was really up
for th is one. As he admit ted in a
trackside intervi ew, he had spe nt most
of th is sea son's clu b racing get t ing his
new Harley / Aermacchi R R-250 sorted
out, and h e was ready. By co n t rast, the
en ti re Yam aha team was fra ntically so rt ing o ut tires arid suspension righ t up to
the start of the Fin al. Ro mero had
decided to leave hi s 250 p arked to
co ncen trate on the National.
Wh en Bouncing Bob Malley did h is
number , Pier ce holesh ot ever yb ody and
led into turns o ne-two with Pat Hennen
an d Roberts we dged in traffic be hi nd
h im . Roberts cleared away fro m every -bod y in th e infi eld as Do n Castro came
up o ut of tr affic to p lay tag with Pierce
an d even t ually p ass h im down the main
st raig ht.
Pat Evans go t off hard coming off
the back st ra igh t in to turn six, just as he
wen t b y Mike Devlin. Mik e sa id he was
on th e brakes, down shifti ng, and he
heard Evans ups hift as h e wen t by.
By th e fo urth lap , Roberts h ad
pu lled o ut four and a half seconds on
Cast ro a n d Pier ce (w ho w ere
slipstrea ming each o the r ), wh ile six
seco nds ba ck fro m t he m J im Dunn of
Everett, Wash ington took o ver fourth
with Mike Devlin, Pa t Hennen and
Marty Lund e righ t on his heels. These
fo ur stayed grouped toget h er , drafting
eac h othe r b ac k and fo rth fo r several
lap s.
F irst Devlin an d then Henne n
wo rked themselves cl ear of Dunn ,
finally Hen nen appeared to have wo n
the drafting duel. Mike Devli n
co ntinued to press, however, and finall y
dr o ve p ast Hennen o n t he o utside of
turn two, t ucked under thro ugh t urn
th ree, an d began to clear him sel f away
down the bac kfiel d. He led for two laps ,
the n Hennen rep assed . T hey sw app ed
places o nce m ore before Devlin's
Yamaha seized so lid at th e end of the
main straight. He got the clutch in just
in time, went wh istl ing across the grass
apron o utsi de turns o ne-two , and got it
haul ed do wn to a stop out o n the far
banking.
