By Jim Stewart FO UR CORNE RS, CA L.. SE PT. 29 After last weeks' killer course, the Shamrocks treated the riders this weekend with a good fast, challenging run. At first the course looked t o be ISDT type, but aft er a fe w mil es i t c h ange d int o a good ,. 36 o ld fast d e s e r t race. There was just eno ugh ro ugh stuff to sp read the ride rs ou t at t he first part of the co urse when th ey were still fre sh. The banner d ropped at nine sharp, and at the b o mb it was Benny Padilla (Yam ) w ith the lead, followed closely by Cord is Brooks and Bill Becker (who was trying o ut th e o pen cla ss for th e first' ti me aboard a new m on o-Yam ah a ], After th e bomb, Padilla started ta king nu mero us unplanned st ops to kiss a few of the rocks strategi cally pl aced o n the co urse. Cordis Brooks too k over th e lead, and co m ing into the pits it was Cordis first, with Ama t eur Dan Dawson on his newly ac q uired Husky , in h ot pursu it . Rimrunner Kevi n Hasten was next , followed clo sely by his desert buddy Ben ny Pad illa . Then ca me Bob Bale ntine , Bill Becker, Smokebomb Geatz, and the Divisio n II terr or , Dean Modessett, It loo ked fo r aw hile that Dawson migh t try repeat ing Balentine 's ea rly rid e thi s year, winning o verall as an Amateur. But wh en the chec kered n ag was drop pe d , Cordi s with his y ear s of desert ridi ng was the vic to r . Da wso n fo und o u t he wasn't quite ready for the overall win yet, bu t st ill p ic ked up fifth overall , and of course first ov er all Amateur, firs t 250 . "" Kevin has only been an ex pe rt since the last part of 73.. and since he began riding his CMC sponsored CZ this year, he has picked up several overall wins in the desert, as well as seco nd overalls like this one. Hasten was also the first heavyweight rider to recei ve 3 - finishe r pin . . Bob Balentine has only bee n an expert a matter of mo nths, and already has a few overall wins under his kid ney belt. This weekend he was third ove rall , seco nd Open Expe rt . Benny Pad illa. since ge tt ing back on a Yam ah a , has been fini shing consistently h igh ; th is weekend fourth overall, second 250 · Exp ert. Rob ert Wadlow finis hed fifteenth overall thi s wee kend , an d th is would normall y be good enough fo r firs t Ama teur, but with Dawso n in the sam e class you are in, so me tim es it is on ly goo d for second 25 0 Ama teur. Tom Ralp has also been giving Wadl ow a bad ti me lately, last week beating him, th is week end fin ishing right behind him a t sixteenth o verall, third 250 Am ateur. And following Ralp , was ano ther Amateur bu rserk o , Dway ne Carter , who rides a co m pletely stoc k street legal 3 50 Hon da fo ur-stroke heavyw eigh t. lie mot ored aro und to fi nish se ven teenth overall, first Open Amateu r. Mike Powers, wh o has also w on overall Am ateur, several times, not o nly o n a 400 , b ut o n a 250, th is weeke nd pic ked up his next to last tr ansfer, with a seco nd Open Ama teur . Gary Co nner to o k t he to p ho n or s in the 17 5 clas s this w eek en d. Ins tea d o f Modessett being first and Kirker seco nd, it was Conner firs t and T im Bowman second. The third 175 to reach the finish was -pilotcd by an Amateu r , Mark Zimmerman, who rides an old Yamaha cr-I, and who was blowing all of t he Novices off at the first of the year, no matter wha t the size of their sleds. He's no w doing the same to the other 175 Amateurs. J eff Kap lan and his sidekick Robb ie Par ma . both of th e San d Sailor s MC, were the next 175 's to finis h in this class. In the 100 class, it was Larry Roeseler , retu rn ing from a ba d crash of n o t so long ago, to take first ahead of an other Harley mounted ride r, Bru ce Ogilive, who also a te it just lately. T he th ird an d fourth . trail riders were Am ateurs R. Young and J. Haas . Foll ow ing th em was th e third T rai l Expert, Dean Martin. (Dean Martin ? Ed itor) . T om Kelly rode his 17 5 Yamaha even fas ter tha n WFO, to take firs t overall Novice o n a Divisio n II b ike , with a co m fortable lead . The next Novice, and firs t 250, was Jack Hal terman, followed by the return o f the dinosau r rid er, Lar k Wigh t on a 6 50 Trackmast er T riump h , who sca red off the r est of th e Open Novices fo r first. Maybe Wigh t and Carter , wh o was firs t Ope n Am ateur o n ano the r f our str oke, know so mething we don't, abo ut elimina ting so me weigh t o f those sleds.
