Griner gets to it By Tom Blattler CORONA, CAL., SEPT. II The half-mile main event for the big bikes proved to be what everyone figured it would be: fast. At the start, it was 17-year-old Terry Griner and Dean Sykes of Vancouver, Washington fighting for the lead into the first turn with Griner taking over the top spo t down the back straight. Th e a mazing thing ab o u t Griner taking th e lead on the straigh taway is that Terry was ridinz a 360cc Yamaha co mpared to everyo ne else 's 650cc an d 750cc mach in es. Griner has become so quick on th e big half-mil e th at it t ake s a very goo d rider with a very quick ma chine to hold him ba ck. By the seco nd lap, th e field was beginning to stretch out just a bit with Griner st ill amazingly holding on to the lead over Sanders, Smith , Voge , and the rest of the Open ma chines. By the fourth rou nd , Smith had moved into the second position ab oard his new 750cc Triumph, and down the back straight Chris got by Griner for the lead, as the riders went into turn nu mber three. By th is time, everyone was wondering what was wrong with Bob Sa nders. and his Norton was not running la o . well in sixth place . By the six t h lap, the top three posi tions were prett y well set, as Chris Smith had o pe n ed up a go od size lead over Griner, wh o was still in sec ond o n the 36 0 . Yam aha , with Nic k Voge running in th e th ird spo t. That is how th ey finish ed th e eigh t-lap featu re with Sy kes lakin g fourth an d Sanders able to grab fifth even tho ugh his Norton was go ing sour. • TRANSPORT YOUR BIKE IN STYLE WITH ACCESSORIES BY TAYLOR A complete line of custom va n, t ruck and m in i- truck ac c esso ri es 7 6 4 2 Clairemont Mesa Blvd .
