Club racing comes to
laguna.Seca:
Tigert scratches a
win, BMW goes
one-two-three
By Jim Lester
MONTEREY, CAL.• SEPT. 15
Today the AFM held its first-ever
road race at Laguna Seca Raceway, located on the picturesque
Monterey Peninsula. The race
drew well over 200 entries, and
once the usual fog lifted it turned
out to be a fantastic day for racers
and spectators alike. The only
major problem occurred during
Heavyweigh t G P practice, when
someone lost an oil filler cap and
dropped a load of oil in the middle of
the high-speed second tum. Five bikes
went down in rapid succession, with
AFM Number One Alan Barbie being
carried away unconscious in the
company of Richard Seifried, who
suffered a badly smashed hand.
Dave Garoutte (Ossa) and Phil Ro cke
(Suz) were first off the line in the
Lightweight Production race. with Wally
Karpynec (Su z) slipping through from
the sixth row to join them. Garoutte
locked his brakes in the hairpin at the
end of the first lap (with a 20 yard lead )
and was ejected over the handlebars.
Wally chased Phil a while before getting
by for good o n th e fou rt h o f 12 laps. In
the 200 class Ed Unini fough t orr a
strong challenge by Russ Callenberg for
his seventh lightweight win of the
season . I (Ya m) led the 125 class for the
first couple of laps. but first BiII Silver
(Hon), and then Bob Gross got by.
The 350 Production race was one of
the best I've seen all year. Bob Tigert
pulled out to a two second lead over his
arch-rival Scott Clough by the end of
the first lap. While these two played tag,
Tip McPartland (Ka w) and BiII Hen ry
(Yaml challenged Harry Klin zm ann
(Yam fo r possession of third. By the
seventh la p everyone's attention was
focused o n McPartland , who had mo ved
past Klinzmann and . was su d de nly
pressuring Clo ugh for second. Two laps
later he picked o ff Scott and m o ved up
on Tigert's rear wheel, As the leaders
came into t he corkscrew o n the II th lap
Tigert we nt too deep, bobbled
mo me ntarily, and suddenly McPartland
and his Denco Kaw asa ki were in the
lea d. As they diced in and o ut of traffic
on th e 13th lap Tip buil t up a 10
bike- length lead, but Tigert had cut the
margin in hal f by th e next go-round,
with only a lap to go. By the corkscrew
Tigert was only 12 feet back, but stuck
behind a lapped rider. Riding right to
the limit Bob closed on Tip as they
charged down the hill into the hairpin
final
turn, cut inside, and
out-accelerated McPartland CO the flag
fo r the win. What a finish!
In the 250 Grand Prix race Ken t
Roc kwell (Target Yamaha) was the hare
an d Rudy Galindo (Posa Fuel Yamaha)
the ho und . Former AMA num b er o ne
Geo rge Miller crashed in the corkscrew
on t he first lap, while Gali ndo fough t
th ro ugh half the field to reach seco nd.
Wit h the race half over Ke nt held a six
second lead over Rudy, b ut two laps
la t er it was only four seconds, th e next
lap three , an d by the 12th lap it was
do wn to two seconds. Kent put lapped
riders to good use as blockers. and Rudy
was sti ll three seconds bac k at the
finis h.
Reg Pridmore led a BMW
on e-t wo -th ree sweep in the Heavyweight
Production race. Ron Pierce and Cycle's
Coo k Neilson followed Reg' ac ross th e
finis h line at half-minute injervals. Class
points leader Ed Unini' lost an
opportunity to add to his total when his
Vanguard Honda broke on the 13th lap
while in th ird. Taking an im pressive
fourth overall was Jim Lipanovich on a
Ron Grant prepared Suzuki 500.
