By Dale Brown "d< r-O'l 00 ... ~ ..c o ... u o VALENCIA, CAL., SEPT. 22 As lon g as a wiggle_o f his left toe produced a gear" change, Frank Giardina (Mai) was invincible in the CRC MX 250 Expert class at Indian Dunes today. When the ga.te dropped for Moto One, Rufus Kerr (Hon) jumped into a lead that would last through the first lap. Lap two found Giardina's Cole Brothers Maico in front and pulling away from the pack at an alarming (if you we re behind) rate. The second moto trip through the dreaded first turn was tightly-packed terror an d Giardina emerged from the confus ion with a decapitated shift lever, des tru c tion-destin ed to finish third in his class, a lap down. Intermediate John Smoot (Hus) took up position at the head of the pack, with Michael Jackson and Kerr breathing down his neck. For seven spine-tingling laps, the top three positions maintained. On the last lap, Jackson, a Husky-mounted Expert , slammed by to take the lead and the win , with Smoot and Kerr following. Kerr and Giardina were tied at the end of two motos with four points apiece. Kerr again got the hole-shot in the final moto , with John Maroney (Mai) and Giardina following. Giardina passed on the next laf' and won. Kerr and Keevan Acevedo (KTM) got into a passing dueL For five laps, neither of them stayed in fron t of the other for more than a lap until Acevedo finally pulled away for second. Maroney finished fourth, behind Kerr. The Expert tally read: Giardina, Kerr and Acevedo. Smoot won the 250 Intermediate crown and Maroney did the same against the Open Intermediates . Reporter's Notebook: Th is pit racing business is getting out of hand. Two squids practically destroyed each other over at Shadow Glen in a head-on cras h. The amb ulance had to cart them to the hospital, whic h left my "class si tting on the line fo r over th irt y minutes. In th e future I'm goi ng to try to get t he nam es (and sponso rs, if they have one) of these squids and publish them. Fair warning. CMC's last Ascot: Pessy wins, Jennings swims By Alan Shepherd GARDENA, CAL., SEPT. 25 The final night of CMC motocross at Ascot Park for 1974 was a wild one. The record books will say this night Dave Pessy recorded his 82nd career win, (two away fro m the record), but it won't say how Jeff Jennings , on his 15th birthday, almost beat him but instead 42 ended up in the lake. It was a case of the veteran out-dicing the rookie. T hey had entered the final moto tied wit h a first and an eighth a piece. In the first round Pessy and Brad Morrison (Bul) slammed into Lynn Skokey (Mai) who had slid out in second and were out for half a lap. Then in t he second, while battling with Pessy fo r the lead , Jennings banged into a corner barrel and went down. So, off they went in the final, again scratching at ea ch other with Jennings in the lead an d Pessy seco nd, pulling away from the rest of the field. Juniors, Intermediates, and Experts were all in the same race, and .when the flag went up, the . first turn brough t some surprises. Tom Burt [Hori] was the only Expert and proved it by snatching the lead. Right behind him, though, were a pair of Juniors, Clint Carman (Hon) and Ron Cain (Suz). Burt gradually got away, but the Juniors held onto second and third places, Carman a few feet ahead. Not far be h ind, two Intermediates were in pu rsu it , one Gary Cain (Ho n) and the ot he r Jeff Sanc hez (Hon], Sanchez trai led Gary all the way until the very end , where he m ad e a block pass at the last t um be fo re snatching away the win. Carman held off Ron all the way , and both held off everyone else. The final moto was the deciding one, an d out of the tight first turns came Burt, then Ron, and then Carman. As long as Carman didn 't crash, though, he had th ings sewed up, so he foll owed along in second and picked up the overall , Gary let Sanchez by when he went over a bcrm while st retching out a lead, but he got back on and chased him until San chez retired from the fight with bike problems. Gary collected the win ,' but Sanchez, like Carman. already had the points for the overall. • 500cc GP of Canada COPETOWN, ONT., CAN .. SEPT. 29 Former World Champion Roger DeCos ter and teammate Gerrit Wolsink delivered a Suzuki 1-2 punch to a small international field at the 500cc Grand Prix of Canada. DeCoster finished third behind Yamaha riders Hakan Andersson and Pierr e Karsmakers in the first 40 -minute-plus two-laps moto after falling twice. In Moto Two Andersson crash ed early, Karsmakers ' 400 suddenly had onl y the two lowest gears, and DeCoster won with relative ease. The 250 and 500cc support classes were own by Frank Stacy "(CZ) and Terry Clark (B us), both with I-I sweeps. • Publisher Sharon Clayton's publicity mongers have mongered up some pretty good publicity for our leading lady lately. She was featured on the women's pages of Atlanta and Los Angeles newspapers, several talk shows and soon , we hope, the Today Show. Gary Scott is resting at home this week after fracturing bones in his foot and ankle at Golden Gate Fields . San Diego County has collected $24 ,067.41 from the California ORV license fund so far.
