Enduro for burn ward For the past tw o years t he Woman's A ux iliary o f th e Pasaden a Fire Dep ar tment has been working to pur ch ase badly need ed equipmen t for th e Los Angel es Co un ty, USC Med ical Center bum wa rd, t he third largest in th e United States. In 1972, wh en the burn ward p roject was started, it took o nly 10 mon th s to raise $6,000 for a n Air Fluidized Bed used iii the treattnent of severely burned patients. When we started the project for the bed, we became aware of a woman who was badly burned and in great pain. In addition, her family had , rejected her because of her appearance . By the ti me the bed was delivered, thi s woman's one arm and one leg had been amputated. By th at time th e woman was in so much pain that she h ad absolutely no will to live. After a short time on the bed her body began to he al and t he pain subsided. Sh e now ha s an arti ficial arm -and leg and lives a full life with her family. , In 1973, Dr. Zawacki, he ad surgeon of the burn ward; expressed an urgen t need fo r surgical instruments to be used on the hands and face. At that ti me it was ne cessary fo r him to borrow the instrumen ts from another hospital. If th ese ins tru m ents were in use D r. Zawacki did without th em . After a y ear of fund raising ac tivi ties, we were ab le to p urchase the ins trumen ts at a cost o f $1,60 0. Because of an unexpected disco u nt on the instr uments, w e were left wi th extr a money . With this money we bo ught co lo r te levisio ns for the patients in th e .in ten sive care u n it at t he bum ward. These are the only diversion the b ur n patien ts have fro m themselves and their pain. This year, 1974, our goal is to provide eight badly needed isolation units of which there are none at t his time . One of the main problems with severely burned patients is infection. These units would provide a sterile atmosphere and alleviate the problem . Readers of Cycle N ews ca n help by entering our fund raising enduro October 27, the SRA Hook and Ladder Enduro . The $8 .50 entry fee is tax deductible. WO:'IAWS AUXILIARY PASADENA FIRE DEPARDIEl\'T Pasadena, Calif. Terry who? Regarding A~ IA ' s President Terry Tieman 's remarks , co nc ern ing NASCAR in h is September 17 issue of Cycle N ew s interview, quo te : "NASCAR has one pr oblem. Politics . One of th e be st things AMA has are co mp etiti o n people . They've bee n there , et c., and have had di rt th ro wn in the ir face s and have fallen down ." I suggest President Tiernan do his homework better. Here are the facts on NASCAR personnel: Bill France, Sr. - An ex -race driver who drove on many a dusty dirt track. Bob Sail, Eastern Dire ctor - One of t he ail-time AAA greats back when men were m en in auto racing. Bob Barkhimer, Western Director Veteran of more than 1,000 au to races, seriously inju re d t wice, et c . A rt At kinson, So uthe rn California Dir ector - Former California J alop y Associa tio n Ch ampi o n , d ri ver in m an y e v en t s a t W e st ern an d Ga rdena Speed ways . Bill Amick, No rt h Western Director Another all- t ime grea t in th e ranks of late mod el stock car raci ng, one of the fines t. An d the list goes on and on. Now to A.\ IA. Terry Tiernan, Who? Ed Youngblood . What? Bill Boyce; perhaps a race or two. , And the list goes on . Mr, Tiernan, as one of the to p men at Yamaha, should not be Preside nt of A.\IA as he has a direct. co n tli ct of interest. Yamah a signs up top riders then refus es them permission to ~o mp e t e in the smaller even ts th at are th e basic backbone o f A:\IA racing. By this action they o p e ra te in restraint of trade, so to speak, as the y deprive the paying public of the services of A:>.IA's finest. This action hu rts A:\IA, t he publ ic , the pr o mo ter who does play an important par t in t he building of AMA , and the co mpetitor himsel f. I, perso nally requested the services of Kenny ,Rob erts las t year fo r o ur races at th e Co w Palace in San Francisco and was willing to pa y extra fo r Kenny. J im Do yle, Ken 's agent , turned m e do wn with th e state me n t th at Yamaha had too mu ch inv ested in Ken to allo w him to run indoors (t he safest fo rm of moto rcycle rac e ye t devised ). A pol icy li ke th is makes a mockery of hav ing Yamaha 's to p man as President of A.\IA. I suggest a neutral p ers o n , possibly a di st ributor of mo to rcycl e parts as past President Mr . Kelly . 1IIr. Tiernan is wi thout q uestion a capable pe rso n , intelligent, but he is lacking in the d o w n -t o- e ar th knowledge of racing, be it cars o r motorcycles. BOB BARKHIMER Scotts Va lley , Calif. A .I1A Presiden t Tiernan is a f orm er A ma teur racer . . . Ed. MXing for Mom and apple pie I'm writing in reply to Mr , Davis' un called for voi ced o p in ion s abo ut Brad . Lackey. He is diss atisfied (o r ma ybe jealous) of th e immaculate co verage which Cycle N ew s has given th e United States' sale entry in the 500 Worl d Cham pionship. It j ust so happen s t hat Brad Lackey is o ne of t he top ten 500cc motocrossers in the worl d . lie 's o nly 20 years old and already rid ing with the best of them. Besides th at, he's all outasight dude doi ng his thi ng fo r M orn and apple pie .
