Staats streaks 0RA again By Dale Brown CALIFORNI A CITY, CAL., SEPT: 15 Steve Staats (Bul) made it two Wins In the last two times he's been out to the DRA desert. At the bomb, though, Staats was .hard pr essed to figure how Heath Hibbard (Hus) had put so much distan ce between him and the rest of the pack. About eight miles out, go ing through a bumpy sandwash , Staats had closed the gap. Picking a smoother trail along the right, th e Bul ha d an easier time transferring power to the gro und and Staats moved up, passed Hibbard and was never headed again. Wayne Garrett (Bul) got past Hibbard soon afterward but all he could hope for was mechan ical failure to strike the leader. As they reached the 20-mi l e m ark, Staat s had a-minute-and-a-half lead on Garrett. Hibbard came through next, pursued by Rich Mark (Hus), who was on leave from the Marines . D.L. McEvoy (Hus). on his first Amateur ride . was running fifth . Running in ninth , Gerald Rou nd (Hus) was leading the Novices. Farther back in t he p ac k, the two lightweight class leaders were having a go at each other. Dennis Greene (Car). who's leading the point standings, started out ahead of Phil Stumbo (Yam). Bu t wh en you're Number Two , you try harder, so Stumbo did, an d he got pas t Greene, although he never did ge t very far ahead. On the second time around the . 23- mile loop, the first two p ositions remained the same. McEvoy got p ast Hib b ar d to take third an d Mark fade d to seventh (he's been away from the d esert fo r a lon g ti me . Earlier th is year, he was a consisten t D RA win ner ).
