IlJ ..c ... u 0 0 • J: U II ...J ;:) The announcement by L & M Cigarettes that it will offer $1,000 and Wide Open Trophy over and above the regular SSO,OOO purse to the outstanding performer from the October 6, Champion Spark Plug Motorcycle Classic at Ontario Motor Speedway, already has observers pointing to a likely recipient. He is 34 vear -old Yvon DuHamel, the astonishing French Canadian who has either won or crashed in all three previous Champion races. DuHamel arrives at Ontario as defending race champion following his crushing double victory of 1973 . He is the captain of Team Kawasaki. Winner of the L & M Wide Open Trophy will be the rider who, in the judgement of the attendi ng press, puts up the best overall racing performance during the two 100' mile heats . During the 1971 innaugural race, Yvon was run ning wit h the leaders when he struck an oil slick and spilled at nearly 120 MPH. He walked away from the wreck, but his motorcycle was demol ished. , In 1972, making a slow start, DuHamel blazed his way past fifty riders in a hand ful of laps ana was nearing the lead when he again lost control and sailed over the handlebars, land ing on and breaking an elbow. He later resumed racing, brok en elbow and all, but was too far behind to be cornpetltive. Last year DuHamel stayed on his wheels all afternoon and won at an average speed of 89 MPH. That 'is the record he will be trying to beat October 6. DuHamel's best racing finish so far this year was a close second behind United States Champ ion Kenny Robe rts last July at Monterey, California. Yvon rod e daringly des pite a badly mutilated hand from an earlier spill. ..
