It was a stran ge day for mo st of the Pros wh o normally ride two o r m o re classes and fi nish at or near th e top. Chuck Sun (Bul ) had it all his wa y in the 25 0 clas s but seiz ed his BuI in the Open class battl e with Rick Burgett (CZ ). 'It was Pessy's 20th win of the season and it mak es him the firs t ri de r in th e CMC 's seve n-year hi st o ry to have at Icast t ha t m an y wins in three consec utive seasons. The on ly tim e he di dn't was in the first moto mi d way through wh en Bell pu lled alongside Tyer fo r a narrow pass and banged into him to send him o ff th e track. In the seco nd mota. Bell co uld n ' t get close and in the th ird stayed right o n T yer 's tail but failed to find an open ing. Johns ton also ro de this class on a Kawasaki and looked good whil e taking a thi rd overall. Of note also is that T im Lunde is ba ck on a Ho nda after spe nd ing ab o u t tw o mo nths on a Kaw asa ki. With Lu ke Messer absent fr o m lhe racing ra n ks due to problems with his Maico t hat haven 't heen totall y so lved ye t. BiB Rubly (CZ) app eared to be th e favorite in the 50 0cc Pros. But in the first mota he came from fifth to win it. only aft er first Rob Zingg (:lla i) and then Dan Barnes (CZ ) each dropped o u t wh ile in the lead. Rubly then led from st ar t to finish in the second, but in the third it was Jim Wilson (C Z) getting on th e th rottle hard and turni ng in his fi rs t night m o t a win in about t wo se asons .
