Howell had a big lead, but Hannon was beginning to press for second. He got it later. In the second moto it was Larsson again taking the lead, only this time it was Mike Hannon who passed him after a brief sign language exchange. Mike, who was back on form, went on to an easy win . Larsson retired from both motos with a flat rear tire. In the 125 and 250 Expert combined Jeff Foland on a 125 Honda beat not only the 125s, but all the 250s as well. This sixteen-year-old, ranked seventh 125 in the nation last year, was really flying and must have the fastest 125 around! The second race was a repeat of the first, Johanna Stenerson (Hon) took the lead in the Powder Puff race with Sue Fish (Hod) in seco nd. It was like this for . about half the race and then Sue really began to close the gap. Sue was about to make her move to pass Johanna when another girl who was bei ng lapped slid out and while getting up almost knocked Johanna down and then backed into Sue's path causing her to stall her bike. Sue had blown first gear and had- to push her bike up a hill only to have it load up on her and when she finally got it started she had fallen back to about tweith place. Nancy Payne who after a fall started almost dead last moved up after lots of fast riding to take second. In the second moto Sue Fish jumped out in front and got such a lead she was never challenged, even with a broken gear box. Johanna had a bit of bad luck in this race and with three spills lost lots of ground. Cherry Stockton took second. This class continues to grow with as many as twenty two entries at some of the races. Sue Fish th o ugh t the combined D-37 and D-38 day at Car lsbad was " p retty trick " in spi te of a blown gearbox.
