Donations are real ly piling up: Infield Ambulance put up a cash donation which was instantly matched by the infield marshalls and flagmen. It was also announced that Mike Curoso put up half his winnings fro m the California State Championship. Costa Mesa. Steve Bast got a perfect score of 15 points, the $500 bonus and a well-deserved title. A nice sidelight occured when Steve Bast donated his number one leathers to the John Fishburn Memorial drawing. Irwindale. Californ ia September 12. 1974 Just a week ago Irwindale played to the largest crowd ever to see a Speedway qualifying round at the Irwindale track. With only seven weeks remaining on the '74 racing calendar, the crowds are bigger than ever . Scratch racing is what it's all about and Bill Cody took the Scratch Main over Rick Woods, Larry Shaw, and Dan Becker, any of whom who could be the big winner this November. • By Dennis Greene Ventura. Californ ia Tuesday. September 10. 1974 With a ground fog that cut VISIbility to zero, a full house of race fans saw Mike Curoso take over the lead of the Scratch Main event Tuesday night for his first win of the season. Curoso held Dan Becker at bay while Sonny Nutter and Steve Bast did bat tie for third. 12 Last Tuesday night was the second week of "radio celebrity's racing." The staff of KACY was on hand for a half- time bicycle race and had a ball . The KACY crew and last week's DJ bicycle racers will have a runoff this week. Bill Meister won his fourth Handicap Main event of the year just ahead of Steve Bast and Dan Becker. T here are on ly two weeks of speedway racing left at the Ventura Fairgrounds in the 1974 season. This Tuesday night will be the qualifying round with 16 riders working for a spot in the National Championships set for Costa Mesa. The final night for Ventura will be the 24th of September when the track champion will be named. Bakersfield. Califo rnia Wednesday. September 11. 1974 Steve Bast has regained the title of California State Champion for the fourth time in the past seven years. In 1969 Sonny Nutter won the title the first time it was put up. then for the next four years Steve Bast was invincible. Last year Steve's younger brother Mike took the title, but this year the crown is back where it belongs - on the head of the Champion of California Speedway Steve Bast . Steve was in fine form all night and ran away with four of his five races, his only challenge all night came from the man who ended up second for the night, Bill Cody. Jeff Sexton, Larry Shaw and Cody were in a three-way tie at the end of the 20 -event show with 11 points each. A final runoff between the three went to Cody, giving him the second spot. Shaw took third for the night with In the Handicap part of the show Dubb Ferrell was the one. Du bb had not had a good wee k since his crash at Bakersfield several weeks ago. Dubb is also a rider to be. rec ko ned with come National night. . Friday the 13th was .a jinx for Rick Woods: he missed getting into the Scratch Main after tangling with Steve Nutter. Rick has been making contact with different riders regularly since his return late in the season, but up to now he always came out on top. Rick and Steve had words in the pits and that was far as it went. Then, in the Handicap Main, Rick and Mike Muntean collided and again Woods went down. Tempers are short with the season drawing to a close and many of the riders who have been knoc ked around all year are knocking back. Even Dan Becker with his far-out, plunge-through style got off, Again it was Dubb Ferrell topping the Handicap Main event for the second time this week. Sonny Nutter put it together and showed everyone that he is ready for the Nationals with his fine ride in the Scratch Main event. The Jack Rabbits Motorcycle Club, official flag men at Costa Mesa, put up the entire club's paycheck for the John Fishburn Memorial. Results in the Results Section. Bob Heterick goes after the Speedway Unicyde Award at Irwindale.
