....... Sue Kannon (C-A) is pretty enough to be a trophy girl. and fast besides. Pat Delligat a won the 125 Beginner trophy dash. his division and first overall over the entire series. He knows the trophy girl by heart . 'M otocross 101: Racing for hometown high at OC.JR z ~ o By Dale Brown a: '" UJ IR VINE, CAL., S EPT. 5 ~ ~ The OCIR High School MX Sum- >-" 'o m er Series cam e to an end with o over $3000 in contingencies being ~ .. ven away. l/l l- _------- .. . speaking of which . here she is. ready to go int o action. This last night of racing feaured a trophy given by a new gazine "High School Dirt Acion" (run by Saddleback High eacher Pepe White and due on the .tan ds in October) to the fastest 125 eginner. The top two riders were taken rom eac h division and they went atit or three laps. Pat Delligata (Hon) won hat, as well as the second division onight and the Overall series title in is class. During the rider's meeting, the riders d been warned that failure to slow for yellow flag (in motion) would lead to isqualification . During an Expert oro, a rider crashed on the blind side f a jump . Four riders ignored the flag. rue to their word , OCIR disqualified hem. If the CIF is going to accept this por t, safety regulations have to have ffect. The racing was over fairly quickly d everybody sauntered over to a spot front of the grandstands for an nlarged trophy presentation. Due to roblems last week, their trophies were resented tonight, as well as the series inners , The whole thing took well over hour, with one brave young lady erving as trophy girl. The minibikers ad gotten braver since the last time I as at a high school motocross. One ider commented to the audience, "I hink my throttle's stuck," and roceeded to sweep the girl off her feet. "Pushey Momma" from Anaheim as here with her team tonight, as they ve been all summer. She's got 54 team embers on her list, yet the powers that e at Anaheim High lell her that there's ot enough interest in the sport. I onder if the football team will get that any. Thirteen members were here night and "Pushey Momma" yel led erself silly for each one of them. Jim Manning, who runs the .\ IX track OCI R, has a lot of hope for the ture of High School !\IX. He' s out to nvince the CI F and everybody else that motocross is (or can be) an amateur sport. The quality of the sport will grow if it is part of a high school program. Beginning riders will have a chance for some extended coaching, so they won't follow the groove all the time and get into those horrendous tank-slappers when they hit the built-up bumps. I can only see one problem: the high cost of bu ying and maintaining competitive racing equipment. Possibly if teams work together during the off-season they can raise the money. But that's a bridge to be crossed in the future. Hopefully, there will be su ch a future. Mark Brown (N15-Mail leads eventual 250 Junior wi nner Aaron Bassett (47 V-CZI. Though he got passed shortly after this photo was taken. Brown hung on for second . 23
