Bakersfield's Eric Gifford topped the field in time trials wi th Hocking th e be st of the Experts in a tie for third fast ti me behind Steve Ek lund and Davc Harris. In the ten heat races the Novices sco re d four w ins over the Exper ts a nd Juniors with the Experts taking five : wins and only onc for the Juniors. Dan McWhortcr ke pt the Novice names on top in the heats as he clocked the fastest heat race win. Hocking had the second fastest, The only J unior victory of the night came when Dennis Briggs defeated fellow Junior, Tom Berry. One of th e wildest races of the night found five riders trying for tr ans fers with th e win eventually ' going to Lancaster short track winner Rob Morrison. Novice Paul Lambert was second with Junior Nick Nazzissi in th ird. Travis Petton and pre-race favorite Skip Aksland swapped fourth pl ace six times in five laps with Petton pushing Aksland all the way out of the program on th e last tum. The Novices gained so mc revenge in the Semis, taking two of the three races. Steve Eklund and Chuck Miller won for the new riders wi th Hocking sc oring the only Expert win (fastest of th e three) . Miller upset Mo rrison and Ascot's number one Novice, Elbert T urner, to gain a front ro w for the final T he Dash was all Hocking, w ho had also won the Dash the week before on the half mile. Eric Giffo rd made a race out of i t on the first lap but ran secon d ahead of Ek lund who came close to crashing twice before endi ng up third. Only o ne rider was ab le to stay w ith Ho cking in t he fifteen lap Final. Dan McWho rter kept w ith in passing and winning d istance the en tire race b ut could never find the opening. E k lund tried every groove possible the first seven laps an d finally ended up third place. Morrison, also a late lap comer, took fourth with Pat McCaul in fifth. Ascot has sen t invitations to the top Junior and Novice riders fro m coast to coast inviting them to compete in a first time match rac e at Ascot on Friday night, Octobe r II th, the night before the National. • Nick Nazzisi and Travis Petton held Skip Aksland (721 to the outside on this turn, cutting Skip out of the F inal.
