Lapping Labor Day at DeAnza By T im Mickey SUNNY~IE.\D, CAL., SEIT. 2 De /vnza !\IX 250 Expert , Mark Sullivan (Bul) rapidly opened up a lead over the pa ck and had only Open Expert Dennis Hazlett (Ya m) to con tend with for pole position. Not far behind Sullivan wa s Rick Lee (Ya m ) waiting for a ch ance to take over. For two motes, they finished in that order - Sullivan out in front and Lee in pursuit. But late in the last rnoto, Sullivan broke his Bultacos frame an d faced the poss ibility of losing everything in the final t wo laps of the day . He held hi s breath, still kept up a remarkable fast pace, and let only one rider past, keeping t he first Overall. The rider he let by, t houg h, wasn't Lee, but th ird place J im LaTendresse (Hon) who was running barely ahead of Lee at t he t ime. By doing so, La'I'endresse's points enabled him to snatc h away t he second Overall. T he 125 Experts lo o ked even faster, what with the likes of David Williams (Hon) a nd Steve Bauer (Hon) . Williams got o ut in f ro nt, and Bauer stayed on his tail all morning long, never quite catching up, but never los ing any gr ound either. Together they left the pack behind. Williams putting together a clean sweep , and Bauer a set of co nsec utive seconds. Rounding out the ranks of th e Experts were the Yamaha mini's of Brian Myerscough and Jeff Ward. Myerscough jumped into the early lead. but was suffering plug problems every moto. In the first, he held on to h is tenuous lead long enough to take the chec kered, but in th e second, even though Mark had been stuck back in the pack, Myerscough's plug fouled and cost hi m the win, Ward's flying pursuit earned him that much anyway, since all eyes were on his inspired cat ch -u p ride . The final moto saw Myerscough get it together, th o ugh , picking up the win he'd fought for, with Ward na turally right beh ind for t he second. • Results in the Results Section . Two top Division II rid ers, Don Stub bs a nd Dave Van 110 m . both of whom have been out a good portion of the season with mechanical problems, returned this week. Consdiering how long they have been wi thout a ride they did quite well, with St u b bs making it to the Handicap Main on a bike th at had never been ridden. The wh ol e night seemed to be a con tinual battle between Bria n Short and Bob Schwart z. ap pea ring in four races together. In the Handicap l\lain Short had a ten yard advantage over Schwartz, but was not able to keep the door shut quite tight enough. Bob came back in the Scratch Main once again to face Brian on a trac k that had be come very ha rd and slick. Bob got the hole shot and led the race for th ree and a ha lf laps when his motor gave way. Brian had gotten wide on one turn and lost traction long enough to let Bobby lI ill squee k by to take the w in giving Brian another second. • AMC night MX at Saddleback By Stewart B. Sapicoff IRVINE, CAL., AUG. 3 0 125 Pro Bru ce McDougal (Hon) proved tonight that you don't get a fact ory Honda sponsorship un less you're one fast dude. He is. As the first moto starting gate dropped Mark Brooks (Ho n ) managed to clinch the hole-shot with McDougalriding right up his knobbies. Bruce didn't waste any ti me about getting down to the business at hand, ( w i n n i n g ) , quickly zooming past Brooks. Meanwhile, second Overall winner for the evening Steve Bauer (Hon) made a rap id advance through the pa ck from fourth place up to second. VALENCIA, CAL. , AUG. 3 1 If it 's any indicat ion as to "the quality of t he races by who attends them, Indi an Dunes has top named D ivision I ride rs such as Sonny Nutter, Steve and Mike Bast, Jim and Steve Gresham, and Scott S ivadgc, kicking back and taking it easy watching Division II a n d 111 riders doing what they themselves do all week long. The riders have asked for an energy abso rbin g crash wall. after Chris Haines rece ived a seriou s concussion hitting the wall last week in turn four. Management has announced t hat it will be placing old tires with plywood in front of them along the now immobile steel and co nc re te c ras h wall. (Maybe petitions do wo rk!) T his week 's raci ng was hig h ligh ted by Mike Bast establish ing a one lap track record of 12 seconds. This is to give the Divisio n II an d III riders somethi ng to wo rk towards. To th e first person wh o can b reak that tim e will go S IOO, if do ne this com ing week. If it 's no t b roken t his wee k, 525 will be added each week un til the record is broken. Also setting a track tim e to he hroken was little Lance King, o n a Mini speedway hikc. lIis t ime was about a sccond aod a half off of Mike Bast 's . lie has offered 2.'; for a n yo ne who can break his reco rd. DeAnza MX: Only a handful of winners By T im Mi ckey SUNNYl\IEAD. CAL.. AUG. 3 1 De.Anza 's Labor Day MX kept awa y quite a few people from the regular Saturday MX, making for some rather small classes, but somehow that made t he co m pe tit io n that much keener. The 125 J un io rs felt the pressure especially, wit h only the first p lace winner promised any gold, so they dusted off a goodly number of 250s in their three -mao ra ce. Peter Schaffhauser (Ho n}, co nc ed ed by the others as the one to beat, just could not get th ings in gear that day. He was knocked down early in the first mota while in the lead, and had thrott le problems on and off (but mostly on ) all day . Ron Cain (Suz) . got aro un d him a nd ca p tur ed the first mota . but brother Gary (Ho n) turned the t ables a nd grabbed the second. With Schaffhauser essentially out of the way. and a final moto tie, i t rapidl y became a one-on-one fight for the tr ophy. Gary go t past Ron at the end o f the straight and began to stre tc h o u t a lead, but when his front wheel began to wash out on the uphill sweeper, Ron ca me to within a knobby 's breadth of passing him. Gary held him off, though, and managed to take the Overall by fifty fe et at the end. Native American Speedway By Steve Richards 250 Jr: 1. Mark Musgra ve (CZ): 2 . Marvin Masuda (H a n); 3.
