Wat kins an d Martella grabbed the lead o n the th ird lap when th e Co lbert and Ho llad ay bike had carb pro blem s whic h had to be repaired. Stev e Sterner crash ed h ard in th e ro cks 25 m iles o ut, (an d was s ti ll in a co ma at Bay G en er al Hospital in Ch ula Vista , Califo rn ia as o f August 28, 19 74 ). Lap four saw t he positi on s the sa me, but the Colbert /H o llad a y ma chine was within fo ur minutes of reg ain ing th e lead , and s till had 57 m iles to do it in . Watk ins had ret urned to the p its to fi x a flat , and Ho lladay had co me in with a co llapse d rea r wheel. T he fin al lap in the t rue mileage 285 mile race sa w Co lbe rt an d Ho lladay spe nding 14 minutes in th e pi ts mak ing repair s. Yet , an hour and 24 m inutes lat er , when the firs t bi ke appeared over t he crest o f a hill one m in ute from th e fini sh . th e ra ce was again very close in bo t h elapsed t ime and ph ysical raci ng. It was th e th ird place tea m bi ke of Pad illa an d Bar ber (Hus) d ic ing with the Colbert/ Ho lladay Ya ma ha fo r th e lead. even th o ugh down in elapsed time. In a frantic a t tempt to regain the ph ysical and elapsed time lead , th e Watk ins an d Mar tella Hus ky do ve s traigh t off a treach e ro us downh ill sho rtc ut (legal b ut scary ), d idn ' t cras h, but sti ll ca m e ' up sho rt . Drama was ad ded to the finis h b y t h e kno wledge that Watkins an d Mart ella had lost t heir rea r brake halfway aro und th e las t lap , and Colbert and Ho lladay ran o u t o f gas, q uic kly scrounging so me to get go ing again .
