AUG. 27 While not too many Pro rid ers showed for CRC's usual Tuesday night m otocross tonight, the ones who t oo k ho me cash earned it. In the I 25 Expert battle, it was strictly be tween DeWayne J on es (C-A) an d Rob Ro llins (Bul ). Jones grabbed th e early lead in t hi s leg in a very bad p lace at t he moment. Thursday night . Bruce returned to Irwindale, the scene of his cras h, j ust to show everyone that he had healed up. He proved it in a big way as he won th e Handicap Main, staying just inc hes ahead of the Bast Brothers for the full five laps. . Ear lier in the night Rick Smit los t co n t ro l in turn one, hitting the cras h wall half way around the trac k 'wit h such impact th at the cem ent holding the 4x4 was crac ked , the 4x4 it self was split. and th 2x6 top bo ard was splintered. Unfortun ately Rick's leg was in between the bike and the wall when he hit. He was hospi tali zed with a broken leg. Mike Bast , denied the win in th e Handicap "lain, made up for it b y winning the Scratch Main Event. .- - - . . .- ~ ~ - '.- ~ , -- Tonigh t was Mike Bast Appreciation Night, w ith Mike givin g all his n ight's cash winnings to the Children 's Hospital of Orange County . Mike battled his way into both Main even ts . taking sec o nd to Larry Shaw in the Handicap I\lain. Bast has been outstanding all year in Scratch ra cing, but had to settle for fourth in the Scratch Main after being pushed to the crash wall on the fron t straigh t by Dan Becker. Dan lost time in the tangle as we ll, letting Rick Woods pull away for the win. Bast also was pu shed down ea rlier in th e night by Woods in the Mat ch ra ce when both riders hit turn o ne together. Mik e had a slight lead an d th e " righ t-o f-way " but Rick tried to get a wheel in. Down went Mike , cu tti ng his knee and twisting his fingers . The event was re s tarted a nd Bast won it . T he Mike Bast Appreciatio n Night was no t designed to honor Mike , bu t to hon or th e fans. "The fans here a t Costa Mesa mean a lo t to me," exp laine d Mike. The berserk style wa s replaced by a smooth, co nt rolled . spe edy blur th at pulled away fr om Ro llins th roughout. In the 250 Expert /lntermediate- . Open Expert round, Hal Straus s (Mai) and Will Harper (CZ) were out in fro nt and contesting the 250 class cash . Str au ss held the lead while Harper tried every passing trick in the book, plus t wo more . Nothing' worked and St rau ss was ahead all the way . In th ird was a swift In termediate, Larry Bird [Kaw] . Joe Root (Bul) held off th e ever-chall engi ng Rand y Berk ele y [Mai) for fo urt h and firs t Open Ex pe rt . Mot o t wo was a repeat e xcept for Bird's crashing while in third an d later whi le trying to ca tc h up. On e bene fit of sma ll classes, a poor fini sh in one rnoto doe sn 't hurt too much. At this point the battle for points had been decided. Only fo ur riders sho wed for the third moto. Bird took th e early lead wh ile S tr au ss was se tting up t o zap him . He d id to make it three fo r three. Strauss was the 2 50 Expert winner natch, ahead of Harper. Bird took the 250 Intermediate trophy (the way he's go in g, it won "t be too long before he'll be going for cash). Root wa s the Open Expert winner. Jim Holley won the Mini Advanced class o n a Ho nda XR -75. He the n ca me back in the next event to place T hird Overall among the first divis ion of 125 • Beginners. On the same bike.
