After the race was ove r, the Safety Communications Aid Team (S.C.A .T.), whose services we too often take for granted until somebody gets hurt, held a Champagne Poker Run. The run utilized the tight, twisty, nine-mile long second loop, with the winner getting a share of the entry money and a bottle of champagne. Anyone who wanted to participate could, alt h o ugh some of the four-wheeled things had trouble with the tight sections and some fathers got a workout pushing their kid's bikes up the hills. But most every bod y had fun and Pat Jones drew a full house to grab the bubbly. • Short Track Series September 6th &13th, Results TOP TEN : 1 . Steve Staats (360 SUI) . 2. I Kevin Hasten (CZ) picked up $100 for his dazzling victory against the other Experts and Amateurs in the DRA Rare Desert Scrambles. Hasten and George Harvey (Hus) reached the smokebomb at approximately the same time, but Hasten took over after that. On that The hot set up fo r pa ssing slo we r riders - ba rk. 13-miJe first loop , Hasten caugh t his front wheel in a rut and went down. He was up and on his way before an yo ne caught him. About 10 minutes later he lost his sti nger, but t hat didn 't slow him down either. Coming through the pits on the way to the second loop, Hasten had a co m fort able lead over Am ateur Cary Davies (Yam). So be it.}, Harvey cam e through next, in fourth. Alan May (Hus), Jim Irby (Yam), and Art Knapp (Hus) fo llowed. 'Ho ward McCasland (Hus) moved up on the second loop to challenge May and Knapp and he got past them, only to pull off when the heat got to him. Harvey had been suffering from a cold all weekend and he too had to pull off when he had troub le breathing. Birdie moved past Davies to take second on t he second time around the nine-mile loo p . Knapp got past May on the th ird time around and then got in fron t of Davies when the latter pitted. Jim Roberts moved steadily through the pac k on a I 75 Pen ton to occupy seventh. R.E. Sands was in next for second Open Amateur, ahead of May. May was riding a borro wed, Tracy-tuned Husky, wh ich he said he really liked. Roberts completed the list of top finishers . In the Novice event, D.L. McEvoy (Hus) d o m ina ted it the way Hasten did and picked up 525 for his efforts. He left the race with an Amateur color bar, so the other Novices can breathe a bit easier now. Dennis Tipton was in second, but still got first 250 on his Elsie. . B. West won the 250/0pen Beginner contest on his 250 Bul, with Alan Newell (Hon) following. The tight course really suited the 250s as their riders garnered the first 20 or so positions. , Tony Stuart (100 DKW) was giving a way up to 75ccs away in the 0-200 Beginners, but that didn't bother him as he won it going away. Next race, he 'll be a Novice as would any other rider who wins Overall against the Beginners. Tom McBride and Allen Larsen, both on 175 Yamahas, were second and third respectively. R eporter's Notebook: The course used by the DRA for both the Silver Cup and the Rare Desert Scrambles was a tight, twisty affair utilizing a 13-mile first loop and a nine-mile second loop (run two to four times depending on the class racing) . The beginning racer could ride it with no particular problem, but like a motocross course, it was tricky at speed. Anyone who earned brass or cash had to work at it . . . For those who have been wo ndering what a Rare Desert Scrambles is, it was ORA's idea to co mb ine a Hare 'n Hound with a European Scrambles.
