Almost 50 rid ers participated in the four-ti mes -yearly run, all aim ing for th e Cup, valued at around $500. T here were no classifi ca tio ns fo r the bike size or rider abi lity . George Ha rvey (Hus ) ca refull y planned h is run tot he smo ke bomb an d it paid off as he got the re before anyone else to take the early lead. Howard McCasland (H us) was run ning in sec o nd before he got out of shape on a sandy hill an d cras hed . Staats ( Bul) to o k two kic ks to start his bike, then waded through the dust to take sec ond o n McCasl and's endo. He pa ssed Harvey shor tly before the end of the first 13 -mil e loo p . l\l cCaslanrl worked his way up to third an d set o ut a ft e r Harvey . m aking up a lo t of the d ist an ce on the firs t tour of t he second loop . Harv ey was successfully fend ing h im off when . on th e lastJ oo p , he o ver-bcserked it u p a steep h ill, got in to some ro cks and cras h ed. McCasland passed him there and wen t on to take se cond O ver all. Harvey remounted and carried on to ta ke th ird. Jim Irb y ( Ya m ) rode co nsi st en tly to take fourth ; holding off Ken Bishop (Hus]. D.L. McEvoy (Hus), a Novi ce , worked his way thro ugh the pa ck to follow Dennis Greene (Car) for awh ile and then passed hi m on th e last loo p to take sixth Overall and another all-i mportant transfer ride.
