Jeff J enn ings (Han) beat Derhammer in th e fir st mo ta , coul dn't q uite catch hi m in th e second and was lead ing in t he third when he laid th e bike down in a tig ht comer, injuring his foot and m issing the last moto. He still finis hed fifth, be hind DeSoto. Pete Maly (CZ) finished all fo ur motos wi th good placings ( 1· 1-4-2) to win Overall in the Open Expert division. Mechanical failures were a bigger factor in this division than in any other. In the last race, Jim West [Hus] pulled a huge lead, only to have to st op and remount his chain. Bill Rubly'{Cz], who was in a good position to take the Overall, had his chai n com e off when he inherited the lead. Rick Salmon (Mai ) took the lead and held it. Bruce McDougal, riding a factory Honda 350 four-stroker held off Maly 'til his transmission quit. Escape Country seemed unprepared for the overflow crowd of racers that showed up and racing went on until 7:30 in the evening. Things had gotten underway late, the track dried out in a h urry and had to be wa tered often an d the am bulance was gone for aw hile. Ana ther hit ch was that the firs t tu rn is q uite narro w , cutting down on the n umber of rid ers who can race at o ne time. Ho pefully th ey'll iron out the b ugs. At leas t t hey're offering good -mon ey on a regular basis an d rh ar 'sa start. • Results next week. .. TRABUCO CANYON, CAL., AUG. 25 A horde of some of the best Southern California Iiotshoes descended on Escape Country's first "last Sunday of the month" series $ 1 0 0 0 moto cr oss. After the smoke had cleared , Tim Lunde, Morris Malone and Pete Maly were the winners. So many Experts were on hand that each cl ass had to be broken down into tw o events, ea ch . running three times. Anyone who placed sixth or better went on to a "fourth mota ," with the best cumulative point total winning. Tim Lunde (Kaw ) held off Mark T yer 's strong, last-minute attack in the fourth mota to grab the Overall 125 Expert win. Lunde, who had been in com pan y with either Tyer (FM F) or Bruce McDougal (Han) all day, had won th ree o ut of four. T he winner of the other division. Dave Miller (Han). was set bac k by a first turn crash in the final and was never really in contention for t he win . He finished third behind Tyer. McDougal fini shed fourth, still in -the money. Morris Malone (~lai) worked his way up from a bad s tart in the first mot a to finish second behind John DeS oto (O s s ) . Aft er that he got to th e chec kered flag first every time t o t ake home 250 Expert first place bucks. Jon Dust! They've got dust at Escape Country! OK, you didn't like that caption, eh?
