CRC laid out a co urse wh ich would ha ve been a bore during the day but was just righ t at night, a lot of fire roads and easy tra ils. T he hardes t thing about riding at night is the dust. It 's j ust like ridi ng in den se fog . Spooky. It could have been dan gero us on a hard co urse b ut C RC di d an excellent job in . picki ng t he layout . T he first ch eck was quite a ways out and we sm elled it 'o ut as we approac hed a little ' hi ll and sure enough there it was. Good old jerry (my rid ing partner) had hi s t imekeep ing down pat and led us in righ t on time. The course was marked pretty well except at one spot about two m iles from the end of the first loop. Ei ther a tum arrow got knocked down or it wasn 't t her e to begin with but a lot of riders were going up a wash instead of a road. It was mo stl y follow the leader time. On a well marked enduro co urse if you go 50 yards without seeing a ribbon it 's time to back track. Most got back on the right t rail without losing too much time. Now it was race time in to the finish and that is a thrill at night. It was int eres ti ng to see how fast we could go at night (with in reason of course) . A 45 minute break to get things squared a way for the second loop and a lot of riders are wo rking on their lighting systems. There's craz y jerry Sparks. He burned his headlight out just before the enduro so he taped a flashlight to his handlebars and o ne to his helmet and rode the enduro an yway. I'm surprised he's stilt a live. T he second loop was faster than the 'fi rs t but st ilt fun. The first chec k was lo cat ed at t he bottom of a sho rt but ste ep sand downhill and if yo u hesi tated Y$)U were lat e to the chec k. It 's a very str ange fe elin g to stic k th e fr ont wheel over an edge wi th t he ligh t sh ining out into space an d s ta r t down. You ca n' t see m uch . Hey hey hey, zeroed t he chec k 48 seconds in to our m in ute, jerry's t ime kee ping is su pe rb. Leaving the chcck the run heade d in to a rock field wh ich really wasn't that bad. May be we're use d to ridi ng at night now. More sand washes, roads, including a mining road which wound up so me small mo untain out there somewhere. (I had no idea where as I was totally disoriented. I kno w the area pretty good but at night it's easy to get turned aro und. Ah, another check . What ! We' re a min ut e late! T ha t turkey, jerry! Where did he learn to time keep ? It's all his fa ult! The last three miles into t he finish were the d ustiest. At tim es yo u couldn't see yo ur front wheel. Finally we hit the road leading into the pits and to t he end of a fine enduro. CRC had nice finisher pins but ran out towards the end. With only 200 riders that's a real bummer. I know CRC was trying to cut their losses but that's c utting it a little close. There were quite a few zeros so it will be up to t he tiebreaker chec ks to decide the winner. Four seconds lost between two tiebreaker checks was the b est score I heard. At night, that 's re all y in credible. For the real enduro freaks it was time to load up and he ad on over to Adelanto for SRA's Crack-of-Dawn Enduro. It 's now three a .m . We're all crazy . • Cooper motorcycles are made by Moto Islo in M"xic o.
