Man y of the Beginners stayed away becaus e th ey feared the ap pear ance o f out-of-town hot shoes ' (who fai led to materialize) and the race drew fe wer riders th an th e n ormal weekly af fai r. Larry Mer ideth walked wa y with the 25 0 Semi-Pro t ro p hy an d a li ttle lo ot but he was not witho ut compe ti tion from Lew A lt er (B ul) and Nat e Gross (Ha n ). Ada Co un t y Deputy Sheriff Denny Neib aur had to drive a pat ro l car that pa rti cular nigh t and was n' t able t o co n test th e event . Bill Co ok rod e Neibaur 's bike (a Champion- fr am ed 3 6 0 Yamah a) ani:! had a bit of bad luck when t h e ' engine wen t so ut h . Nite 'crossers chuck dirt at Woodburn By Bill Eckstein WOOD B UR N, ORE. • AUG . 9 With a drag race . goi ng o n ne xt door to t he regu lar Fri day nigh t Ci\1C mo tocross, Woodburn had so met hi ng go ing for j ust about every body. For those that did n't care f or the drag race or mo tocross noises, the managemen t held two separate foot races d uri ng th e night . Very quie t. About t he on ly thing t hey didn 't have was a b ig ride r t u rnou t. \Vith t h re e co n sec u t ive night race s a week in t his area, most of t he riders elec ted to m iss t his one. T h e 125 Intermediate races were plagued wi th all kinds of hassles. Th e first mot o saw just abo ut every entra nt leading a t least o nce before falling do wn. The sh owdown was in t he third mota , with five different rid ers in. co;' te ntion for th e Overa ll win . It looked like J im Richards on (HOI:') was go ing to win the last m o to convi ncingly, but th e ra ce was red-n agged towards the en d o f t he last lap after a pro t est ab out t he s tart. Five ri ders had fa llen down at th e s tart but th e race was n ot red-fla gged at t ha t time. Shortl y after th e restart, so me of t he light s went o ut due to a faulty bre ake r switch . The race co n tin ue d in t he dark, Brian Hall (Ha n) ta king the win by virtue o f a terrific s t ar t as com p a re d to poor st arts by his t wo cl osest co m pet ito rs , Tony Bu yas (Suz) and ' Richardson. At t he fla g it was Bu yas over Ri chardson by a smal l margin a fter a race-lo n g battle. The Pros had to run a co m bi ned 125 / 2 50 bash d ue t o the fa c t t ha t on ly tw o 125 riders an d three 25 0 rid ers showe d up . Eld y Sw en d sen (Han) startled the res t o f th e field by charg ing into a fa ntastic lead at the s ta rt with his 125 and holding it for three laps befor e being ecl ipsed down the ba c k st raigh t by ' Larry Nibler (250 Man ). Pat Em mo ns (250 Bu l) wo rked his way up from a bad s ta r t to pass Swe ndsen o n th e fourt h lap . then final ly wo r king h is w'a y past Nibler on the sevent h lap , co nt in ue d to stre tch his lead until th e fi nish. Nib ler hung onto secon d and Sw endsen was a di st ant t hi rd to ca rd firs t 12 5.
