Now take the selector rod (o r pull cotter as the Zundapp parts book calls it), and being very ca ref ul, grind off the rivet that ho lds the piece on the end of the se lector rod which engages the shift ... d rum assembly. Take the selector rod apart and chuck it in a lathe. Set the lathe center into the other end 'o f the selector rod. Now comes the hard part. You either have to set up a lathe grinder to regrind it or do it by holding a porting tool and shaping it b y hand while the lathe is spinning it for you. Don 't try a nd cut it with a tool bit be cause it's just too bloody hard and you might break the sele ctor rod. 42 Now look at diagram o ne a nd your sele ctor rod. You see five eve n ly spaced not ches. with a notch right in the middle of the first and sec on d notch, this is ' where neut ral is . Now you see the ligh t. That's righ t , there's a neutral righ t between all those other notc hes, too . Those are the ones that we want lo get rid of by grinding the selector rod so tha t ea ch one of those little fla t spots between the no tches aren't the re any more. Thus we have made it difficult for the deten t to sit there on lop of the rod. Be sure when you arc gri nding the rod t hat you ma ke t he distance between t he notches loo k like little footballs. After you ge t done grinding the selector rod, polis h it to a very smoo th surface . If yo u happen t o ha ve o ne of th e very fe w engines th at ca me into the States with a ground ro d alrea dy in it. jus t pol ish it to a very smoo t h su rfac e. ( Fo ur years ago I sent ba ck a rod to the Zundapp facto ry and as ked them if they would make the rods like th e sample encl os ed. I never he ar d fro m th em on it but later found a fe w en gines that had fact ory m odified ro d, in t he m .) We will modify rods at o ur Florida factory for 16. . Even if you have a m odified rod yo u still need to mod the drum for more positive shifts . Now look at diagram two. The sto ck pawl on the left, the mod ified pawl in the center. and the new fa ctory pawl on the righ t. Ily lo o kin g at the new style shift pawl you can see Zundapp im pro ved o n what we c an do wi th the stock pawl. Let 's modify the o ld sty le stock pa wl (diagram th ree ). Take your be nc h gr inder and put o n a very soft fi nish stone, clean it an d ma ke sure th e grinding surface is flat. With the pawl being as sm al l as it is an d hard to ho ld onto , if you take th e end of an o ld ba ll poin t pe n and pus h the end of t he pawl onto it, you can grind the pawl without grinding your fingernai ls at t he same time. Grind the tip of the pawl on a slig ht rad ius, be ing ca reful not to grind it 100 short : a little bit does a lot for you. After grinding, polish the t ip so th at it is very smooth . Now we have a pa wl that is stronger and one that will fit int o the stop notch more positively.
