Tim Lunde (Hon) tried to keep pace but had mid -pack starts in the final two motos and five laps are not th e longest time in t he world to work up . Dave Pessy (Fra) also tried but just couldn't make things click. If all goes we ll th is week. Mike Bell will be going for h is No. 12 nigh t win in a row right here at Ascot. But, it was tough, to o, i Don Bo ng o rno (Hon), who has yet to win a Cl\IC Pro Overall, put his thumb in the dike in the first moto and eeked out a two-foot victory over Bell. But the hole got bigger in the next two and Bell came rushing through for two wins and brought the Overall triumph w ith them . Here's how his records stand : I I straight night wins, 10 straight days and night ace s. and six straight here at Irwindale. After Bongiorno had troubie in the second moto, Dave Pessy (Fra) moved in to contend, but he, too, couldn't hold off charge r Bell and ended up second Overall . AUG . 4 National I25cc Motocross Champion Mart y Smith returned to his home stomping grounds today a t Saddleback Park and almost go t stomped int o submission by a Iistfull of determined giaru -killcrs, Heading the list was, of course, Number Two in America, Bruce ~IcDougal and CMC Number One c urr e n t lv the honest SoC.1 rider, Mike Bell. . McDougal surged to t he lead after a back-and-forth bat t le with Bell on the first lap, and started pulling awa y for eig ht laps, Then, sudden ly his factory Ho nda lu n ch ed a piston and Bell , still second . took over. But it was only briefly. He had been ho lding off S mit h fo r seve n lap s, h ut fin all y Marty got h y and wen t on to win. In the second, Bell again jumped to the lead down the hill and hel d it for more t han a lap. Tben Ti m Lu nde (lio n) got by followed tightly by Smith in thi rd, Tommy Croft (Fru) fourth, and l\IcDougal. Fo r eight la ps the five we re never more t han 50 yards apar t. Bu t th e fastest amongst t hem ' vas Smith. who weaved his way through and finally took over fo r the win, Lunde. second in this one, claimed second Overall when Bell slipped back to fifth in the fin al for third OA, snap p ing his 10 event "in streak. "I just couldn 't get started," sighed Smith. "I'm used to longer motos a nd it took me about six or seven laps before I could really get going." He a lso carried a great deal of praise for Bell.
