One helluva p rivateer/shop effort. They probably made expenses. . out of the over 60 entered eventually finished the Baja Internacional. The two-wheeled machines seemed more "together," more sui ted to this event, even when up ag ainst mind-boggling megabuck efforts su as ch Bill Stroppe's Ford racing team. They had a complete racetrack semi-trailer and two fud truc ks plunked down several hundred miles out in the m iddle of nowhere, complete with a private P.A. sy stem for orderi ng the multiple pit crews t o their "funny earn p ickups and Broncos. Fact o ry effort spe lled with as. Contrasted with this were the privateer bi kers who wo uld com e bouncing an d sweating into th e p its to ask hopefully , "Has an ybody see n my gas can?" All the e ntries were runni ng for t he sam e o verall p osit ion s and purse mone y, but so meti mes the co m p etition just isn't meaningful. Admittedly, th e official Husqvarna effort was n o t exa c tly small t im e. It paid o ff with 10 out of th e 12 bikes due to us e th e Husky te am pits fi nishing the event. Squarehead Swede Klaus Nilsson came o ut of bo at-building retirement to prepar e and wo rk o n th e tw o maj or Husky West efforts suppo rted by Bob "Baja Bear " Evans a t the halfway p oint as they did everything necessary , apparen tly, to gel their scooters to th e fini sh, including re-jetting for altitude. Th eir reward was an overall win backed • up with a fourth overall by an o th er 400 Husky ridden by Howard Utsey and Bo b Gross i, wh o was making h is Baja debut and loo ked to be lik ing it. T he re are a t housand mo re stories based on the personal tragedies and triumphs of the record number of motorcycle entries in this tough, quick charge throu~ the mountains and canyons of Baja California, a place that gets no smoother even as it gets more developed. Beyond all these personal agonies and good feelings of achievement, the first Baja Internacional will be remembered by o ff -ro ad racers as "the o ne a bi ke won overall. " After seeing the incredible efforts of some of the four-wheel entries (which bordered on wretched excess) and knowing that a couple of guys backed by a couple o f vans and lots of knowledge had beaten them all with basically well-prepared stock-framed b ikes, well, if you rode motorcycles it kind o f made y o u grin ins ide. • Results OVERALL WINNER , M itc h Mayes /A .C .
