Continued from page 12 Howerton took over third nearly 30 seconds back. Hartwig was next to go ou t after the Yamaha breathed dust through an overtaxed air fiI ter and stopped, handing the lead the Velky. Jimmy Weinert (Kaw) had moved passed Zahrt and Howerton into second when his Kawasaki joined the other marques on the sidelines. Zahrt's Bul q uit, too, drowned in pre-mix after the filter clogged with dust, oil and mud. When the drop-o ut action slowed to the point whe re it was possible to establish a regular se quence of ri ders for one full lap at a time, Velky held almost a 45-seco nd lead over Howerton. Sernics followed in third. Pierre Karsm akers had worked up into fourth place after being hit by another rider in turn one at t he start. Kars ma kers ' right leg was badly bruised and required m edi cal attention af te r the moto. On the white flag' lap, Howerton led Sernics and Marty Tripes had taken fourth from Karsmakers, Sernics got past Howerton for second and Tripes' Hus ky ran out of gas returning fourth place to Karsrna kers on the last lap. Jim Pomeroy (BuI) took the lead at the start of the second mota followed closely by Vel ky and Weinert. Weinert got around Velky on lap two and started pestering Pomeroy. Gary Jones (CA) moved into fourth fo r his best showing of the day, but later dropped out. By now all watering efforts on the trae k were useless. As riders dropped off the hill into the deep valley, they disap peared into a cloud of dust until Weinert follows Pomeroy down into the dust; got past to win mota two. they emerged once again up the opposite embankment. Midway through the mota, Weinert squeezed past Pomeroy and went on to take the second Heat win. Combined with his push-across finisb in mota one Weinert emerged ninth in the Overall standings for the day . Pomeroy held onto second easily ahead of Velky's third, followed by Semics and Howerton. Zdenek Velky to pped the field Overall wi th a 1-3 total. Husky riders Gary Semics and Kent Howerton finished second (2-4), and third (3-5), respectively.
