The entire show and a record crowd to pped off their efforts. Ho wever, after the races I was informed that not one, bu t two. of the original men in the Club responsible for organizing the first Castle . Rock National and guiding the event In later years were ki lled in accide~ ts. . Stan Rister was one. Dick Kret z was the other. Stan drowned trying to find a sun ken boat. Dick was electroc uted working as a volunteer fire man. Both m en served as President of the Castle Rock club during the years when the National IT was in the beginning stages. It was u nfo rt un a te, bu t fitting, that both men lost their lives trying to help somebody else in a time of need . JOYCE ROMINE Rokon Wheels As Team Manager of Rokon's Racing T eam. I object to Mr. Schneiders' incorrect reporting about the o u t s t a n d irig performance by Jim Hollander of the Rokon Team in the Bad Rock Enduro. Following are statements I object to : I. ) "Jim Hollander rode nine miles on a flat." In fact, Jim rode the last 30 miles of the firs t day on a rim over some of the most difficult parts of the course and finished in his hour. 2.) .. then fixed it the following morning in the impound area. Not to o difficult unless you're riding a Rokon, which Jim was." In fact. it ~ quite easy to fix a tire on a Rokon. TIre changes have been perfo rmed in less than fo ur m inutes. 3.) "It took about 30 minute. to fix it b ut on a Rokon that's good t ime." Ji~ was on a bronze m edal after riding 30 miles on a rim a nd had no reason to ru sh . Also, Jim had a d!fficU!t ti me pu t ti ng a tire on a magensium nm tha t had very little lip left on it afte r a 30-mile ride . The team finished four out of five bikes with two Gold and two Silver medals. The only Rokon that didn't fin ish the second day was Jim Hollander's because hi s rim wouldn't hold a tire after being ridden 40 miles (30 on th e first day and ten on the second day ) on the rim . Thanks. GARY STRABALA Las Vegas, Nev. N o. it do esn't - purely an illusion p erp etrat ed by o u r turk ey ph ot ographer . . . Ed . Moto mouth Superbowl III was a pretty good show. except for one person ; Larry Huffman' 'sfi ll hasn't learned that a little "knowledge wo~ld be' -b'erler ' rna 110 decible screaming. His " an no uncing" spoiled an otherwise enjoyable evening for many of the spectators and participan ts alike. Two things stood o u t in particular. Speedway star Larry Shaw en tered the 50 r Support clas s but looped his bike in practice . His back-up bike ran poorly during th e first moro, and he was la pp ed repea ted ly. though he did an ex ce llen t j o b o f sta yi n g out of faster ri d ers ' way . T hen after the race, Huffman m ade snide co m m en ts that obvi ou sly S ha w d idn ' t have the stamina fo r m o torcy c le raci ng which , in his esti mation is much m ore grueling than spee dw ay When ha w rep lied to tha t statement , Huffman loo k it out of con tex t and m ad e a very rude c rack that since S haw was ridi ng so slow. he (H uff m an) co u ld easi ly rid e more laps, not e ven emphasizing the reason for Shaw's poor how mg. Larry Huffman has never , and w ill neve r race or even attempt to ride m otocross. speedway . desert, IT or eve n trials, so I don't think he is in an y position to be judging another rider fro m up in his little zoot-suit ivory to wer. Huffman was oblivious to the fact that there were othe r good riders in the Co lisseum besides Marty T ri pes. S ure. Tripes rode well, but so did DiStefano. Mur phy, and a bunch o.f o ther A mericans , not to men ti on the Europeans and th e support riders like Staten, West .. Payne, etc. Comments like "My God. look at Tripes go," and "no one is going to catch Marty now" really gave Huffman a way. An announce r is supposed to entertain the crowd w~th information and co verage of the entire race ; (he ignored several fierce battles for places further back which were far mo re exciting than the leaders}, and above all. show no prejud ice or favo ritism . If Huffman thi nks Marty Tripes is the only American star there is. maybe he ought to go to a sport that really needs ignorant screaming Roller Derby. Huffman and Dick Lane wo uld make a great team. Who else could ha-:e the heal th officials tum down hIS volume at a speedway race? Boy, that sure was a relief ! A few people like Huffman. Bu t a hell of a lot more people don 't . In the wee ks since the S uperb ow l, I have ta lke d to hund reds of peop le at mo t orcycle shops and at races, an d the overw helmi ng maj ori t y lik ed the sh o w except for the anno unce r. In most cases the po or anno uncing was th e first th ing they talked about, be fore 1 asked th em about it. There are several announcers around of m uch h igher caliber ' wh o could ha ve do ne a far su per ior job at th e Superb owl. Next year the pr omo ter should seek them out and save us, the pay in g p ublic. the ago ny of another Larry Huffman Show, w ith on ly guest star Marty Tripes. I wonder how m an y of this year's spectators won't return next year be cause of him. !\lARK COSTELL Pasadena, Calif.
