Coming in a sq uin t-ey ed second was Dan Roberts . The 125 and 25 0 Amateurs co mb ined for what had to be the most exci ting race of the day . In the first mota it was Gary Murphy all the way , never being chal lenged after th e sec o nd lap . In the second mota it was a different story, as Eric Harvey moved his YZ into first while Gary got stuck in traffic in abo ut fifth place . As each lap ro lled around Gary would pass ano ther rider until final ly he was u p be hind Eric . Cary slowly whittled Eric's lead down to nothing on the last lap, bu t Eric was having non e of this an d won by a mere bi ke 's length. Ten sect ions were laid out by San J ose P. I. T.S. over a six mile course. With 20 MPH winds an d dust blo w ing, the red -eyed ride rs we re a bi t wear y at the end of the day .. Sec tion One was dry dust clim bing u p a ro ck y hill, a sharp tum whic h sen t you back d own wi th an off camber turn bac k up , on ly th is ti me it was mu d and roc k ins tea d of the dus t so "yo ur throttle co n trol had to be righ t fo r both dry di r t and mud . T he hot test race o f the day was between Open Experts Jeff Mullins [Mai) and Rud y Leon (Pen). At th e twan g o f the rubb er band Mu llin s go t th e lead , but Leon wa s righ t on his tail pu s hin g hard. For several lap s Rudy hou nded .J e ff on the hard and d usty Sunnyvale track . Then Leon decided to make his move and he cu t t o the inside of a tum as Mullins was taking the high and o utside line . Coming out of the tum a t sp eed Mullins plowed into Leon and they b oth we nt down. From then on it was a race to see wh o cou ld ge t go ing fir st. Th ey bo th kicked at their mach ines frantically for wh at seem ed like minutes. Th e Penton sprang to life Allen Shaw (Pen) d id so me fast catch-up rid ing t o win both 250 Int erme di at e motos at Sunnyvale.
