I am reminded o f th is gap every ti me The Wild One reruns on th e late show. Why isn ' t there a program about motorcycling on TV? Audience? Over 12 million active participants. Ratings? Ask ABC what s c o r e s h ighest with their sports audien ces . Advertisers? If American Horse can pay for an hour a week on the networks, wh y not us, hmm? Obviously, somebody qualified has to do it, for the TV creators have seen The Wild One too many times t o picture motorcycling as it really is. And so, seeing no one better qualified than your co rr esp o nd en t , ] vol unteered. First, I · co nsu lt ed with some large advertising agency executives, who seemed to make encouraging sounds. Then I brain-picked a successful television writer about script matters and engaged an equally su ccessful talent agent and took a fast course in TV production. T he result is a p roposal for a tel e v isio n special in n ew s/ com ed y fo rma t, which we call Cy cle News. Age nt Sy Levin and Associates feels that ABC-TV ' is o ur best bet for national n e t w ork b roadcast. The show is int er esting, informative and entertaining an d shou ld go a long way toward pu t ti ng m ode m m o torcycl in g in prope r pe rspect ive. It con tains the potential for several series spin-offs, T hose alm igh ty television ra tings sh ow that more A mericans view the news than any other p ro grams, while m o t o rcy cle racing turns on more sets than most other sports shows. With a co m bi nati o n o f the two, plus th e co med y inherent in the fun of riding bikes, how ca n we miss ? Bu t network executives aren ' t so sure. Afte r all, it's never been done before. Th is is all new to th e New Yo r k/ H o lly wo od execs. The only m otorcyclists th e y ever see ar e cruising Sunse t Strip . "Is th is what the public wants us to put on th e air?" they ask. So if you wan t to see cy cles shown i n a goo d light on T V, here is what you can d o. Wri te letters to A BC·T V, ei ther the New Yo rk City headquarters or to your local ABC affilia te st ation and tell th em yo u wan t to see a motorcycle show on TV.
