The seco nd moto was a repeat of the first with Ellis , Smith, and Co le the top three. Ti m Hart had placed fourth in the first mo ta but dropped out with cl ut ch problems in the Yamaha min i-mono in th e secon d. Sm ith too k the final moto as Ellis held on to th e overall win w ith a sec ure • second. Ed Co le had rid den his whatzit off all day bu t h is bike gave up to sn uff h is third ove rall ho pes. 250 International 125 National The smallbore class was packed tighter t han a sardine tin with over eigh t y entries to nuzzle up against Bald wi n's new start gate. Two qualifiers and a consolation race la ter , the first mot o wave hit t he dus ty beaches. It looked like a bowl of BB's hitti ng the floor as bikes jounced an d bounced as Jimmy Ellis and Mar ty Smith blitzed into the lead positions. Smith led the first rou nd s but Ellis zapped Mar ty w ith a block pass and w~ never headed. Behi nd the Ellis-S mith clash Ed Co le pu shed h is Kawasak i into solid th ird . a Fal ta led Kar srnakers, Mosier , Jim Pomeroy, and Mike Hartw ig on th e first lap which set the stage for the first Kars makers-Falta tangle. Stackable fen and wo und up last at the end of the first lap . Back in the pac 1>, Kent Howerton and Bryar Ho lco mb m ixed it up, while Jim Pomeroy started a char ge to the fro nt an d took ove r third on lap four a head of Hartwig. Holco mb an d Howerton were soon joined by Jim Weine rt. After a few laps of clas hing, Weinert and Howe rton surged past Holco mb, who' showed signs of tiring in t he ninety-five degree heat. "Hot damn, Ferdie. Lookit that Czech bounce!" "Well no wonder, Ralph . He ain't got no springs on that there SeeZee. Those socialist countries suffer from the lack of free enterprise and inflation." Jaroslav Falt a didn't understand. He won. St eve St ackab le, sporting a jersey modestly emblazoned "U.S. Spo rts," shows he is one by getting prime viewing space in turn one. The tall Texan went on to win the second moto. You will note Jim Pomeroy (12 1, Pierre Karsmakers (2), Bryar Holcomb (84), and America's favorite commie, Jaroslav Falta, nipping at his knobby. 6
